Issues with new 2012 @ 1500 miles
« on: October 03, 2013, 08:20:57 PM »
Ok here I go, I'll try not to ramble on.
I had an 09 c14, so I know how the keypads work, but this 2012 I just bought does not click on all the time when pressing the key. sometimes it works, sometimes you have to press several times, sometimes you have to wiggle the key to get it to click on. We'll..., I went  on a overnight ride this pass weekend, and as I head out I notice gas gauge showing only 1 bar left after only 80 miles on tank, so I stop to fill up, and gas gauge moves up almost to top, but then goes back down to last bar. So I figure something is wrong with gas gauge, but then as I'm leaving the gas station, my (no transponder) warning comes on. So I stop thinking I left it on top of tank bag and if fell off. We'll it was in the tank bag, so not sure what to think. I shut bike off and restart it and and everything is fine, (except gas gauge). We'll continue on to hotel, next morning I start the bike, and the traction control error comes up!! After riding for a bit, error goes off, but gas gauge still not working.

Dropped off at shop tues, and they are putting new fuel rail (I think that's what they said) in it, but didn't find anything else wrong with it. They told me most people don't hold key down long enough to activate it, to be able to turn key. Then it assured him I knew how to use the keypads as I owned a 09 for two years with no problems.

Does anybody have any thoughts on what might be going on? I have installed (hard wired) my gps/radar detector on it, but spliced it from the accessory plug, and did it right, soldered everything! just like I had it on my 09.

Sounds like a bad connection at the switch to me if wiggling it makes it work.

Have you added anything else to the bike as far as lighting etc. Sometimes these cause interference. i had this issue.

That is what I was thinking- maybe he has two unrelated issues, one of which might be interference caused by some added electronic or electrical device...

No I haven't added anything else on it, other than where I spliced off of the cig lighter to power my gps and radar detector. Did it exactly like it was on my 09, and never had an issue with it on my 09.
Frustrating   ;D

A 'NEW" 2012  has had a long time to set with a drain on the battery.  I would put it on a tender and see what happens.  Battery's do not like to sit for long periods on low charge.  The oly way to tell is to do a cranking test and see what voltage drops to, you could check voltage when it is acting up. Look for a minimum 12.5 volts static and 13.2 is good if fully charged.
I always wanted to be somebody......I guess I should have been more specific.

My new '12, bought the end of June this year, had a weak battery.  Dealer was a long ways away, so I used a very slow charger/maintainer (.5A) to charge after being stranded by a dead battery in July.  Dummy me left the key/lights on at the archery shop one day....
From then on no more battery issues.  I may change out the battery next spring for piece of mind.
