Hello, First, I am a dual sport and dirt rider. I rode street back in the 70's and 80's. Quit riding per now ex-wifes request, and am now ready to crack open a throttle down the highway.
SO, a customer owes and has offered a 87 Concurs as part trade.
It only has 24,250 miles. Most of the dings are from various storage events.
SO, I charged the battery, drained the tank, and flushed the clutch reservoir.
The oil in the clutch tank was a very nasty yellow.
After a little hesitation, the bike fired up, and I did a 100 mile freeway run.
The engine is awesome.
The big problem is the clutch slips intermittently.
When I first start out it will hold past 5000rpm on moderate acceleration.
Once it's been running for 20 minutes it will slip on almost any throttle past 4500 -5000. And will also give out on wide open low end throttle.
I didn't change the oil. The bike was purchased through a dealer 3 years ago, and only had a couple thousand miles since.
I would just consider this a worn clutch issue, but the current owner swears there was no issue when they parked it.
I do not have the maintenance records. The only "new" work was a dealer oil change 2 years ago.I would just consider this a clutch replacement issue but thought the factory clutch would be good for more than 24k.
If it is a simple worn out issue, I don't have the manual yet, but replacement looks like the right side case.
Aside from pre-soaking the plates before install are there any other clutch replacement tips for this bike?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Probably a bad clutch star spring. Do a search here and at concours.org. Also look here http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=4004.msg46985#msg46985

There are two holes in the bottom of the reservoir for the clutch master cylinder, one to allow fluid to the piston for building pressure for releasing the clutch, (when you have the lever pulled in) and a smaller one for releasing the pressure in the lines to engage the clutch when you let the lever out.

If it is slipping more when it gets heated up than when it's cold it could be that the small hole is restricted or blocked and not releasing pressure keeping the clutch partly released (like having the lever pulled in slightly) causing it to slip.

Try removing all the fluid from the master cylinder first and with a very small strand of wire clean out the small hole carefully.

With clean fluid in the master you should be able to see a small surge of fluid come up from the small hole when you release the clutch lever from the pulled in position.  Just make sure you release the lever slowly cause if it's good and clear it will sometimes spit right out of the reservoir.

Thanks for the tip.
The 2nd small hole is blocked.
The only small wire that would fit in the hole didn't have much strength, and only folded.
I'm thinking maybe pulling the whole cylinder off and cleaning it out.
I doubt the fluid has ever been changed.
Is there anywhere to get a diagram of the clutch system?
If I allow the trade I'll get all the manuals, but don't want to commit on the trade until I know exactly what it's going to take.

What kind of trade value??? Keep that in mind too, the bike should be worth maybe 13-1500 bucks....I bought an 86 in 2007 and put 27 thousand miles on it before I sold it...so dont be too worried about age.

HUGE THANKS to turbojoe78, that was it.
I wound up just flushing the whole system.
Figured it was never serviced, and dot4 needs to be replaced every year.
Blew out the hydraulic cylinder and it works great.
Going to take it out on some estimates tomorrow, should get a good feel for everything.
The only problem is now I think I just want to go get something new.
At least ABS, performance modes, and fuel injection.
And NOT red
As for value, Kelly lists it at 1600.
I'm thinking closer to 1400.
