Just curious, how does a person move through the ranks from newbie to sr. member.

You need some kind of a trophy or 'badge' to help you along. I find desiccated rodents work best for that....

Either that or it is based on post count.

Posting in the Open board doesn't count.  You need to post in the C14 boards and work at home.  That's certainly helped my post count somewhat.  I'm also addicted to this place.  I've tried to find help but so far no luck.
