Always do what Mr. Steve "The Carb god" says or else !
« on: July 13, 2013, 07:47:19 AM »
I learned the hard way that when you send you carbs to Steve and he says that there is rust in the tank you do not just visually inspect the thing. It looked great but after just 3 rides my bike broke down due to gas spilling out of the overflow tubes. So today I pulled the tank, petcock, added some BB's and gut rust ! So now I need to find the best way to clean and seal the tank. Ideas, tips and I Told you So's are welcome.

POR-15.

Sorry, had to post that quickly previously. Have more time now.

I used the POR-15 several years ago on my first Connie.
Worked well.  lasted for years.
I know many others used it as well.
Another option: (Rev Rider can give info) is coating the inside, using a Zinc Cathode.
I may do that on my present Connie as it sets far too much.

Yeah, Kareem was pretty good back in the day...

Oh, you meant the tank stuff.  I'm sure if Kareem had a rusty motorcycle tank, there's a good chance he'd use his namesake!

I've used this on two bikes and found it easy to use and looks good when done.

it has a cream color interior and that is why it looked great to me. Yet I am pulling rust out of it.

Sorry to say this.
You just startled all of us.

POR-15 can only be applied once. Can not be re-applied.
Once coated, the coating cannot be removed.

Not sure about the others. But I assume they would be the same... Particularly if you don't know what coating was done previously.

You might be looking at getting another tank.

Ride safe, Ted

If it's cream colored, it's probably Kreem, which dissolves with MEK. Not sure you can get it all out, but it's a start.

This kit includes a stripper which is supposed to remove old sealers.

My friend has a '97 Triumph that he put gas in and never did anything to it. I went over and drained the float bowls first, literally yellow varnish came out. The tank has rust and bit of rust all around the filler hole. I told him to get a new tank or Kreem it or use another newer type system. I'm not even going to think about looking at his carbs, I'm not a carb guy. I'm also interested to see what else is out there for rusty tanks.

I am starting to think that the filler holes are my issue as well. I have rust remover in it now and will have to finish the job KCB or Kreem

I used the kbs kit from Murph on Shoodaben. There was no rust in my tank; now there won't ever be. Steve
