Home made auxiliary fuel tank
« on: May 04, 2013, 11:23:29 AM »
I needed an auxiliary fuel tank for checking the float bowl fuel level as well as when running the engine when I sync the carbs on the C10 I'm resurrecting. So rather than buy one, I decided to make my own out of a good heavy duty 1 qt HDPE bottle I had sitting out in my shed.

I drilled a hole in the cap and machined up two aluminum adapters that bolt to each side of the cap which are sealed by two Buna-n o-rings. I drilled a hole through the center of the S/S button head bolt for the fuel to pass through, and it's past an over night leak test.

To mount the bottle to a stand I use in my shop that already is used to hold my powder coating oven racks as well as my carb/throttle body sync gauges, by machining up a simple 1/8" aluminum plate that the groove on the neck of the bottle slides into. The small round aluminum piece with the hex machined onto the end is a screw in safety stop that keeps the bottle from sliding out of the bracket when in use.

All I have to do not is pick up a section of 1/4" fuel line from the auto parts store and an in line fuel petcock and it's ready to use. I also just remembered that I need to put a small vent hole in the bottom of the bottle to allow the fuel to flow, so I'll machine up some aluminum pieces like I made for the outlet sealed with o-rings and a 1/8" pipe plug that I can remove to vent the tank

How can a carb sync gauge which I already have a custom made one I built be an alternative to a auxiliary fuel tank?  ???

There is also a auxiliary tank idea on that page.

Many ways to do this, all inexpensive. I have seen a mechanic use and old coffee tin with a nipple and plastic tubing in the bottom, and a wire handle at the top so it could be hung over handle bars.

I just use an old overflow container I have from my ZRX.  The fuel line just clamps on to the bottom nipple and I hang it from the rafters (of course I capped off the upper overflow nipple and install a fuel shut-off valve about 3" from the bottle ;)).

That's a really nice set-up you made "MetrickMetal". :chugbeer:

Does this mean we get a "Re-Do" on life too?

I got ahold of a few of these:

I cut the bottom off of one, ran a zip tie through a coupla holes I punched in the side near the bottom. I hang it from the bars with the zip, bottoms up, hook up a 3/16ths clear hose that fits inside the Conc's fuel line, and stick the other end on the nozzle. Then put some gas in it. Yeehaw!

As the pic below shows, I made an aux tank that looks EXACTLY like the OEM fuel tank from my Connie.  In fact, you can't tell the difference.  If I run this one dry I have one from an old Sears lawn mower that uses the same hose size.  Like the inventive genius behind the others, though.
