Setting out for BRP Friday
« on: May 29, 2013, 09:32:00 PM »
Heading over to Lancaster OH on Friday. From there US 33 to US 50 to Strasburg then the start of Skyline Drive. Straight down Skyline to BRP on Sunday....how hard is it to stay in the speed limit? ANy tips? Staying at a motorcycle camp... Willits I think on Sunday.

SOuth to Charlotte then cross country somehow to Covington GA.

Hardest part seems to be getting around Atlanta to get back up to Indiana, pretty sure that after Sherman hit the city they decided there would be no easy way to get through Atlanta ever again

any input on routes, places, eats or sights is appreciated.

Skyline drive is too slow and nothing but cyclists to get in your way, now the BRP is great, but not really really great until you hit the NC side. I would avoid Atlanta like the plague, just no good way around that nightmare.

Battle of Cedar Creek Campground near Strasburg VA , cheap!, nice, a bit noisy

Castiglias Restaurant near Strasburg VA, pretty good Italian food

Gooney Creek Campground near Front Royal VA

The BRP Lake Powhattan campground around Mile 395 has HOT SHOWERS, unlike the other BRP campgrounds.

Thanks for the heads up.

Don't know if there is an alternative to Skyline so I may have to show the Concours speeds she has never seen but in the driveway.

Got a hotel at Strasburg really reasonable http://www.hotelstrasburg.com/

Appreciate the campgrounds info. Reserved a cabin with a garage at the motorcycle camp.

Don't know how to avoid Atlanta. Mys sis in in Covington/conyers and i gotta get home to Indiana.

35 MPH speed limits and expect to hit traffic backed way up because of reasons such as these site seeing and going up the mountain roads at 1-3 MPH:

Covington is on the east side. Look at Hwy 138E to 78 East (Monroe/Social Circle, GA) and then53 west to Winder, Gainesville, Dawsonville, Jasper. Loop through the foothills on 53 to I-75 on the north side of town and catch I-75 at Calhoun, GA. Stop for lunch at the Dawsonville pool room if you get there around noon.  It's a local place downtown with lots of "atmosphere."

It's a long ride, but the 53 part is very nice. Atlanta's big. If you go through, go very, very early. Traffic gets bad starting around 6:30 am.

I've had some good dinners in the Hotel Strasburg, never stayed there 'cause I was camping.

OK Fellas.

Great info...printed out the Atlanta route. I am outta here......in Rain to start of course. Guess I do not have to worry about where I am going to put my Frog Toggs till I load up my GF's Kuryakyn bag in Lancaster O. Better I carry her stuff on the Connie and she rides the RT with her gear down low in the side cases. I did convince her to leave the kitchen sink and I will be repacking her bike and bags before we leave SE Ohio in the am.

thanks for all the help

New Gold plug/K & N Filter and decided to make the jump from dino to fresh Rotella last night.

Cardo Scalas packed and ready to go. See y'all on the return.

Pretty great riding on the Parkway and Skyline. Not too much traffic at all for a Sunday. Threat of rain must have kept em all home. Stayed at Strasburg in in VA. Excellent room and really took care of us on the bikes. Next night off the BRP at MP 177 to stay at a beautiful little MC camp called Willville. There is also a nice little hotel there that is easy to get into to. Stayed in the cabin which was very comfy and the bath house exceptionally hot showers and clean but I could see enjoying the camping there also. The talk around a campfire with guys who had camped from Alaska to Maine on their V stroms and such was enthralling. Most guys there had woned a myriad of bikes and shared their favortie local roads.

On down to Concord NC via the Andy Griffith Museum at Mt Airy. US52 into town is a trip. Leaving NC we headed down to lancaster and across SC and Ga through Greewood and Abbeville on some pretty great roads. No traffic and 4 lanes with lots of good scenery. Not sure why any one would choose the interstate there. Athens GA and over to Conyers on 138 was nice too.

Came home up US 41 to Athens Tn and caught US 127 at Crossville staying at the lodge at Lake Cumberland and then heading up into Indiana on US 421. Shocked from buying premium at $3.31 in KY and jumping to $4.42 just by crossing the Ohio River.

Somebody is getting rich on us.

Great roads great rides and a lot of the US seen on this trip.
