I got rear ended at a freeway exit ramp.  I watched the woman in the rear view moving moving too fast and looking hard to her left.  I said, "Please don't hit me" just as she hit me.

Well, I knew that there was no sense it getting mad or irate - that wouldn't help.

She was pretty upset and asked what to do.  We called the LEO.

While we waited I learned that she was on her way to off-site training for a minimum wage job that she had just gotten.  They told her that if she was late, she would lose the job.  Knowing the company, I think that she would have lost it.

It turns out that she was completely lost.  She was 30 minutes away from the site with about 20 minutes to get there when she hit me.

So now the poor woman lost her job and hit a car.

I only had my car hit.  I learn to keep things in perspective.

Glad you weren't on the bike and are OK.
The last time I got rear ended was by a Texas State Trooper, in his squad car.  He admitted fault, but it took forever for me to get a check from the state.

I think that a bumper is like a helmet. If it is hit in an accident it needs to be examined. Youmight need to replace it, because you can't see all the damage from the outside. If she is at fault, she can pay for it.

+1  I've been rear ended twice, but while coming to a stop so the impact was probably greater.  The outside of the bumper didn't look too bad, but with today's honeycomb interior, the bumpers safety is compromised.  Both times I had to replace mine.

Glad no one was hurt.

Something similar happened to me back in '90.  I was at a light that had turned green, I was just moving my foot to the gas pedal when I was hammered into the middle of the intersection.  Checked all three kids, twins were in their child rear facing seats, I bet they would have learned to speak sailor if they would have been awake!!  I pulled the keys and got out.  The woman who hit us was drunk as a skunk, sparks were coming from under her car and I could smell gas.  I pulled her keys and threw them as far as I could.  I was of a mind to rip her out and thrash her but lucky for her my oldest was watching and it just wasn't something she needed to see.  The WSP showed up, gave each of the kids a KLSY Bear, did an FST on the woman, ran her and found out she had 3 previous DUIs.  This made 4.  My right knee still has issues from banging the dash.  The front bench seat did an auto incline from the force of the impact (estimated by WSP at 50mph) and my knee hit the dash with a bit of force.
I went to the yard the next day to get a good look at what used to be a car (Mercury Monarch with a fresh 302).  The frames underneath?  Think pretzel.  Car was beyond done.  Settlement?  Not much to speak of.  Ended up with another boat, purple this time.  And I got a cheap Chevy Luv.  Fuel regulator was a switch controlled by me.  At idle I had to flip it on and off.

Steves right BTW, cars and bikes are built everyday, our family isn't.  So glad you are OK and nothing more than pissed at an inconsiderate person.

Thanks guys.  :chugbeer:

I crawled up under the rear of the car last night when I got home. I couldn't see any damage at all. It all just seems to be minor scuffing of the bumper skin. I'm debating even doing anythng about it. The body shop would prolly screw something else up trying to fix it.

I would submit it to insurance just so that the other driver would get dinged from her insurance company....

That's the part of the equation that has me debating. Since the woman didn't get a ticket she needs to pay for her carelessness somehow.

You could have been on the bike. She had a kid in the car. This statement would put it over the top for me:'Then she said, " I could have just taken off when I saw you pull into the parking lot." You could take a day and go see about that stiff neck.

I was rear-ended on a bike a couple years go.  It was in stop and go traffic.  She'd been behind me for well over a quarter mile.  Then WHAM she hit me.  Didn't knock me over, but jammed my license plate up under the bike and wedged on the tire really good.  Uninsured.  Didn't speak English.  Joy.
Do not go gentle into that good night.

File the claim against her insurance... it'll affect her rates!  :)

As far as her Grandson... if she wouldn't have been so careless, he wouldn't have been in any danger... she caused the "accident", in her words.  His well being is her priority and concern, which obviously wasn't much since she wasn't paying attention to traffic and vehicles... just lights.  :o

Funny you should say that about the stiff neck. Yesterday in the afternoon I did get a stiff neck and I was a bit worried about that. My neck seems fine this morning though.

I got a call from her insurance company this morn as I was getting ready to leave for work. I didn't have time to talk with the agent then but I'll be giving him a call after lunch.

Got sued after an accident a few years back.  I asked if the lady who hit me was OK.  Plaintiff's attorney's implied that my asking this was an admission of responsibility.  My attorney told me to, and I quote "In the future, keep your mouth shut - it's way less expensive that way."

Wow, that's such crap! How did the case go?

It's a good thing that I'm such a callous ass  :o  and didn't ask how anyone in that woman's minivan was doing after the 'accident' eh?

No out of pocket $'s - judge threw out the case.  Two days of depositions (and lost pay) for a 5 second accident.  My insurance Co payed my atty's fees.
