Bed and Breakfasts-getting pricey
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:43:51 AM »
We used to travel a lot more than now, and we used to stay at bed and breakfasts, they usually were a lot less expensive than motels, you usually got breakfast, met some interesting folks, usually in old houses, and most important to us, no pets, no smoking, and REAL clean. We usually paid around $50-85 a night, now this was 20 years ago. I checked a place we stayed at in Canada, $225CD! BEFORE taxes and gratuity! We paid $60USD last time we were there in 2001. OK, the exchange rate was a bit better, but man, that much? I found two places, one in Erie PA, another in Marietta, OH that were $80/night, and looked very nice with great reviews. Another was in Union City, MI at $125/night, maybe. Marietta's looking good. Anybody else stay in B&B's? Its been awhile for us but I didn't think it would go up that much. We don't do hotels, no way, no how.

I've noticed the same. I think its a trend. The other idea is just renting a room in someone's home, which doesn't always imply breakfast the next morning. That's usually much cheaper. I assume you know about airbnb.com right?

Some are ok but I find that its usually an overpriced room in an old house with a mediocre breakfast. So unless I get a recommendation from someone I trust, I stay with the hotels I know.

No Brent, I've never heard of that, I'll look into it, like I said, we've been out of it for years because we've either camped, or went on a bike ride and did hotels or used a condo. Hotels have gotten positively disgusting and downright unhealthy the last 10 years or so. Of course, there are exceptions. I just think $300USD to simply lay my head on a pillow for 3 nights as we really don't stick around the inn during the day, is too much. I agree, its become a bit of a cottage industry, no pun intended, where older folks go and have a getaway or a themed outing. And also prices have risen for everything, help, supplies, taxes, fuel, insurance, etc... My wages have not gone up that much and niether have my taxes, fuel, insurance, etc...
