Pre-Concours -first post
« on: November 24, 2012, 05:29:18 PM »
After a hiatus of many married years (23), I'm back to seriously riding beginning in 2007 with my purchase of a 2008 Kawi KLR650. A great and CHEAP (admitted cheap bastard) entry vehicle. Blessed with year-round riding weather in Phoenix, AZ, I've become addicted to the HOV lane and commute pretty much every day as well as a lot of weekend rides.

Since then, I also purchased a beautiful 2009 Triumph Street Triple-R in Oregon and rode it home to Phoenix, AZ over two days. The Triumph was almost the antithesis  of the KLR... amazing front wheel lifting power, 0-60 in the low three's and passing traffic was a blip of the wrist vs. a well planned maneuver. Don't get me wrong.. being a cheap bastard, the KLR is ME! But my GF loves to ride and the smallish perch of the Street Triple and no storage had me setting my sights on the Concours as my next acquisition.  I can't wait for some of the longer trips without being at 5k rpms  the entire way on the KLR and being able to take more than a toothbrush and underwear. The Concours seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Now, I wouldn't recommend this approach of obtaining a different bike to anyone... I have to be the luckiest rider.... but I was rear ended on my Triumph as traffic came to a standstill on the highway just two weeks ago. Long story short, nothing broken but a lot of bruising and the Triumph is totaled. Between the property damage settlement and small settlement for pain/suffering, I am close to my goal of $10k for a Connie. I've been lurking for the past few days and haven't seen anything to discourage me from this wonderful bike. I also have another riding buddy with one that has nothing but good to say about it.

Assuming the Mayans calendar stopping was just because they just became "bored", hopefully in a month or so (assuming insurance checks arrive) I'll be able to find a connie to suit me and my budget.

Hi Jim, welcome. It looks like you did your reentry to riding the right way. By the way I think the Mayan thing was a union walkout and the Mayan Calender Corp closed the factory.

1. sorry to hear about your wreck.  another good reason for allowing lane splitting.

2. the KLR can carry whatever you need and has been ridden around the world.  Here is my '08 that is now in the possession of my next door neighbor.  28,000 miles on it and still climbing.

3. If you do buy the Concours, invest in some extra lighting from skenedesign and mondolighting.  Every bit helps when in traffic.  Also, don't forget to budget for traffic citations.

Point taken. The KLR is quite capable of carrying a lot of stuff with added cases; something I haven't done. My 2008 just crossed over 33,333 miles last week and it's still running strong.

I'll check out the additional lighting, too. I do try to stay within 10 mph of posted limit... so hopefully I can save on traffic citations  ;)

In the sport touring world, we like to refer to them as Performance Awards.  :)  Welcome, and get 'er done!

I saw that one...and am also looking at several others. I have to wait until I have check in hand from insurance; hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I do also have flight benefits on US Airways so I can do a fly and ride to most cities.

I've got a rss feed for craigslist nationwide and a few other search engines I'll use. I'll have to watch the weather up north, though; don't want to get trapped by snow/ice.

Yes, I did the doo-hickey mod. The quality of the actual part itself has improved in the past couple of years...but the spring the they used to tension has never been up to the task (that's what I read on the forum). The torsion spring is simple and works so well. The mod is relatively easy to do and the community is awesome with tech days and guys to borrow the special tool from. That is one of the big plusses for the KLR.... virtually everything is DIY-able. Cheap bike to buy and own.

Did the spring mod and the thermo-bob to help with engine longevity.

Do I have this equation correct?

MM x 23yrs - wife = GF + Motorcycle + SM

The Concours is a great bike for 2 up riding. Good luck.

I've heard... can't wait to test it!

Very close... I'd probably use the following representation:
SM + Motorcycle + GF > MM + XWife + 0

Yeah... went back and saw some of your posts. Very cool. Glad you are doing well. I had same experience... rode my Street Triple back from Oregon to PHX over 2 days. Long way on a naked bike. Plus, most of my leisure trips have Colleen along.... not much space for her on the old bike. This should work out well. Best of luck to you!

Nix the Doo for me, Although my bike is more trail than road.  I did the .22 mod, really is the best bang per penny mod ever.  I also installed the Q4, quiet and no tweeting, not to mention a huge weight savings.  If I were piling lots of road miles or rode her hard I'd do the 'Doo.  And get a set of real pegs for her.

Ok, I'm all in. Just picked up my 2011 Concours... black with about 8,300 miles. Although at least 3/4 of the approx. 205 mile ride home was in light to moderate rain with temps ranging from 39-47, I still had a blast. Can't wait to ride in some warmer temps on dry roads this next week!
