the old girl still has some kick in her
« on: October 12, 2013, 11:07:03 PM »
Today I went to a drag race test and tune, at sacramento raceway with my buddy.

He brought his 6.2 liter turbo LSX powered '82 Volvo. (search 55superbeetle to see his various projects) to see if he could finally claim to have an honest 10 second street car.

And of course, I couldn't let him go unchallenged. The goal, was to see who would clock a 10 first.

A "more bald than I thought" rear tire put me behind right off the bat. A quick trip a moto store two blocks from my house, and I had a new PR3 ready to roll...

By the time I got to the track, my buddy Jeff had already been "spoken to". With no roll cage, he car made a first pass of 11.005! They were chill... But told him if he clocked his 10, he was done.

No pressure on the 114,000 mile girl, now is there?

My first run, right as I arrived, with bags partially full....front tire came up. Had to chop it.. 11.4... Going to have to pull the bags quick! Ha!

I pulled a couple more runs in the mid 11's while trying to see if a second gear launch would work better.

Jeff's next run was his last.
10.7! At 127

My next run, I stopped playing with second gear.
10.87 at 126

One more run at 10.9, and I put the emptied bags back on to see if I could claim a 10 second bagger...
10.95 at 124

Good old girl. maybe I'll give her a bath tomorrow.

That's pretty damn good.  Most folks couldn't get a 650 lb beast to 10 seconds.  I been wanting to take mine to the local strip for a while.   Haven't done it.

What RPM did you launch at ?

I was launching around 5k rpm. I'm not smooth enough with the clutch to keep nose down if I actually have it higher in the power band.

So, as we sat down for our victory lunch, and sent out the appropriate texts... I get a message that one of my other friends is going to go to Tahoe.

So... Since I was already halfway there...

I took a bit of a detour, heading down hwy 49, then 26, and finally hwy 88.

Turns out, my friend had read about a salmon run on a short small creek. So the goal was nice pics.

I think this one was decent...

Two things...

1.  You were closer to a very large carnivore than I ever want to be.

2.  For easing that pup outta' the hole you had a freaking awesome ET.  What was your mph at the big end?

Damn nice riding.
