radiator mounting bolt torque
« on: October 17, 2012, 12:44:45 AM »
hi there,

i replaced the header bolts with fuji lock nuts over the weekend.  the first two were the most difficult ones, but once i figured out which tools I needed, the rest were easy.  in this process, I removed the radiator to make room for my hands.

What are the torque numbers for the radiator mounting bolts (2 at the top, 1 at the bottom)? (I cant find the hardcopy service manual that I have somewhere in the house.  I found hte pdf version of zx14 manual, but it doesn't specify these bolts.)

my goal was to see if the header bolts affect the ticking sound around 3k rpm.  the ticking seems to be gone from 3k to 1k now.  i haven't put the fairings back yet, so the header bolts may not be the culprit.  maybe I need to convince myself that the ticking is normal - :)

thanks,

Upper 87 in-lb
Lower 18 ft-lb

Although, when I took mine loose to gain access to the exh. header nuts I just 'tightened' them up.

The standard motorcycle mechanics rulebook says, little bolts, screw until tight, then one grunt, and medium or large bolts, screw until tight then two grunts. A tight bolt never falls out!

thanks a lot.

87lb-in seemed too much, so I hand-tightened it as well :)

I'll check them on the next oil change.
