Title: Idle RPM?
Post by: Mikey063 on July 15, 2012, 07:13:20 PM
I have a quick question.  I just want to know what my idle RPM should be.  Lately I have been at 1500, and when I go into 1st gear it slams into gear.  Not sure if that is normal or that I am overly sensitive in the change.  I just want to see if I am either to high or to low.

Way too high... 1050 give or take 50/100 depending on your liking.

I run my 06 at 1100 rpm. I too have the first gear engauging problem from time to time. I just pull in the clutch lever for 2-3 sec before I put it in gear.

these bikes do clunk into gear especially when cold, what i do if its cold is befor i start it i pull in the clutch and rock it back and forth a few times to break the clutch plats free then fire it up in neutral and let it warm up at least a good 4-5min, its seems to go into gear a little smoother. my idle is set to 1100rpm

1100 works for me, no clunking, no stalling..

1100 to 1200 rpm and I hold the front brake when I put it in gear.

1200ish (ish=+/-50) on Cali bikes, as per The Bible.   I just put it about mid way between 1000 and 1500 and call it good.

I don't know about your motor but my motor has had a "little" work done under da hood and it idles in my opinion a little better (stronger) than most to which I keep my idle right down there around a grand and even lower without issue.... Her cold idle is a fun one to listen to as she willingly lumps along in the 7 to 8 hundred RPM range.

But most Concours motors and Owners are better off set up higher as I commented originally.

Tony,  I agree with your first post ... 1050 +/- 50 as a good place to have your idle.

Mine has some work under the hood too ... SISF's power cams, 36 mm ZX1000 carbs and your stick coils.

And ya, the cold idle is cool   8)
