Title: Top case pics please
Post by: Dade22 on May 20, 2012, 09:50:28 AM
Im going on a trip soon and would like a top case that looks good.  Not super big.  I also would like to mount it back towards me  more than to have it hanging off the tail rack.

Please help me out with some photos.

If you're traveling alone, Pirates-Lair's backrest/rack sits 2.5" further forward than most racks, it will also accept a trunk with or without a mounting plate. That might crowd a passenger but will work fine solo. If you go with a trunk that has a mounting plate, you'll have more room to re-position it to suit your needs. Here's a couple choices:
SHAD-42:(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc213/philipintexas/Phils%20rack%20and%20SHAD%20trunk/P2070016.jpg)
Givi V46:(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc213/philipintexas/Luggage%20Racks%20Dec%2008/GiviTrunkonthenewrack001.jpg)
SHAD-46: (http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc213/philipintexas/Phils%20rack%20and%20SHAD%20trunk/P2070011.jpg)
SHAD-50:(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc213/philipintexas/Phils%20rack%20and%20SHAD%20trunk/P3160092.jpg)
KAWASAKI PLATE, LOTS OF MOUNTING OPTIONS: (http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc213/philipintexas/Kawaski%20Concours%20Rack%20July%202010%20Taylor/P1040435.jpg)

Givi E55. Works for me. Lots of storage, mounts on phil's rack and comes with brake lights. I holds 2 full face helmets. I think Motosport may still have the best deal on this. BTW, in the pic the case is slightly ajar. When closed it seals tightly with a good fit.

I have a Givi E55.

IMHO, top cases are fugly regardless of their size. If you're gonna' buy one, get something that's big enough to carry lots of stuff. When you're not using it, remove it and store it in the garage.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use a Corbin backrest with a Shad 46 or 50 like ZG is doing with the Kawasaki trunk?

Hey Blanton,  I like the way the Walmart TourPak looks.  Its lines actually make it look like an expensive tail bag.

Having modded the daylights out of a tank bag for electrics and gadgets, I can really appreciate the way you've modded your trunk with the little dome light and everything.  Cool.

Thanks, now the next question. Are there any issues with the stock rails with the weight placed farther back? I mean, the rails are actually plastic aren't they?

I have one of Phil's racks mounted on the metal bars (you are right though the rails are plastic), you can see them in the pictures. I carried a 12 pack of beer in a cooler about 200 miles last weekend with no problems at all. I don't think you would want to go any further back or haul over 20lbs in the trunk.

You should buy a Saddleman bag to put all the heavy stuff in. It works real good with the Corbin backrest.

How do you attach the top case? Do you drill holes in the case? Are they all a universal fit or do you need to buy a bracket specific to the C14 rack and attach it to the case?

Blanton.....this is a C14 not a KLR, that bag is beyond hideous. :o  If I were to ever go the top case route, I would like to go with more of the Pelican style, I don't like the looks of the Givi/Shad cases on the C14.

I have a Shad SH46 with the colored lid that matches really well. Aftermarket rack and backrest on the Shad:

Last weekend, did a 300+ mile day with my wife sitting behind me. She did say the case moves around (bumps and such) which I know is because it's mounted back to give her enough room and because the rails are plastic (why did they do plastic?!). Works great for everyday riding without the saddlebags.

As many have said, the E55 is what I have and really like.  I have had the Shad SH50 and that is a fine box as well.  I used Phil's rack and attachment kits on both for ease of installation.  As far as having a box of these sizes on the rear supports there is NO problem.  I had a HEAVY Corbin on mine and it gave me no problems, the E55 is less than half the weight of a Corbin and has a much more forward mounting position.
