I'm a big fan of hearing protection when riding, at least on long rides anyway. If I'm going on a long ride, I like to listen to music and/or talk radio, and I have a pair of Etymotics ER6 noise isolating earbdu phones with which to do so. Really like them a lot.
Except, they are falling apart. And they are expensive. Anybody using a cheaper alternative to these?

I found a cheap set that works okay at Radio Shack. They had the same triple flange style at the ER6Is and were less that $20. The sound quality wasn't as good. Then again, my friend has a pair of Sony earbuds he loves and they sound a lot better than the ER6. About the same price so that defeats the cheaper equation.

I just purchased a pair of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VTZPO8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VTZPO8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00) and I am impressed as heck. I had to play with the interchangeable ear buds, but once I got the fit, they were perfect. They stay on with I take my helmet off, and the sound is pretty good. Once you get the right fit, it really decreases the outside noise, without eliminating all of it.

I just received and installed new filters and ear tips for my ER-6I's, now all is good in the world again! 8)

I have 2 sets of custom DIY molded ear plugs. I cannot possibly recommend them highly enough. They fit every category that's important to me. They work well, they are extremely comfortable, and frugal. I believe the other topic linked to has details.
