I never go to the uber-squiddish Cycle Gear stores but needed a frogtogg suit quick for a tiny gal and they were the only game in town with a size small in stock.
So I figured while I was in there I'd pick up a KNN 303 oil filter for the Connie. 14.99??? HELLO, WTF??? What is happening hear? Needless to say i didn't buy it.

If you're going to use boutique filters, you have to dig deep into the wallet my friend! ;D

Never a bad time for a good oil filter link. ;)

I haven't shopped there since they started carrying 90% Bilt and Sedici and eliminating their stock of brand name motorcycle gear.
Head over to Napa and pick up a Napa Gold 1358 (Wix) filter...

I stopped before they put that house brand JUNK on the shelves. But i humbly go in there at rare times such as needing an off size women's frogtoggs with no time to order.

Nice, but I can find C14 or ZX14 on that chart? I may be losing my eye sight at my old age of 47

Anyway, I'm getting from a reliable source (bikeland) that all of these will work on our bikes:
Hi-Flo Filtro HF 303
Mobil 1 M1-108 and M1-110
K&N KN 303
K&N (automotive) is a hp -1008
Fram Ph6017A
Purolator L14612, is shorter than PL14610
Purolator PL14610, extended length, flows 7-9/9-11 gpm - conflicting info on flo in the posts
Ac Delco PF1237
WIX 51365
Hastings LF-113 short and LF- 240f is the longer version
Amsoil EAO 103
Napa Gold 1358
NAPA 1356, flows 9-11 gpm, which is the equivalant to the Purolator PL14610 flows 7-9 gpm (but if you type in "PS" before any of the NAPA numbers, you come up with the powersports series which in the case of the:
Purolator L14612
NAPA 1365/PS1365, same as the PL14610 except about .825" shorter

I will support CG, but a nice discount helps in that regard. I rarely buy anything in stock and since I've been such a good customer things come in quicker than most. Our local store also provides a %10-15 discount for riders who have recently completed a BRC or ERC class.
And Steve, what did ol Murph do to ya? Hard to beat his price and close to impossible to beat their service.

Steve, that's $56 + $32 = $88 for 6 filters, free shipping.
-
I was just about to post about the price of Murph's filters. The $56 for six is an add on to the price of $32 for two filters. So from my understanding 8 filters for $88 equals $11 each shipped. I do not know what the price is locally for the K&N filters. I try to order from Murph when I can, just do not know if I will use 8 filters in the near future.
-
What's wrong with the OEM filters, I change the oil every 3,000 miles. My dealer charges right at $9.00 for them, Not bad considering no shipping and he's only 10 miles away.
-
There's nothing wrong with the OEM filters, but I think most people want K&N for the ease of install/removal using the integrated nut.
-
I have 3 reasons why the K&Ns from Murph, one I support Murph, 2 the nut, and 3 could be controversial, with the K&N I do not get the timing chain rattle at start up, it just aint there.

Sorry Wendel, that's incorrect.
From Murph's site.
"We sell 'em by the pair, therefore the price shown above is for two filters. You can also get yourself a set of 6 by choosing the correct option in the drop down list, and save a few bucks over the long haul!"

Nope... 88 shipped is right. The 6-pack option is "+56" from the 2-pack. Add to cart if you need confirmation.
To me, $11 vs $15 isn't a huge deal for the convenience of going to a local shop to get a filter. I am in the "I prefer the nut" category (insert joke here).
The CG flyers annoy me because they are just ads for their Bilt stuff, but occasionally they have a decent tool on sale (go ahead, insert another joke here). I did pick up an LED flasher relay recently that worked wonders to slow my blink rate back to stock.
-
Well, I guess I'm just stupid. I'm willing to pay extra for K&N filters (car & bike) for the integrated nut. CG will ususally match pricing if I have a copy of the ad. I have Sedici leathers, and they are fine, but I haven't crash-tested them. I had a pair of Bilt gloves from when they were first introduced that were not well-made. CG replaced them under warranty and the replacement pair is my favorite glove currently, and one of my all-time favorites. I have never spent more than $110 on a pair of gloves, so I may not have tried the "really good stuff". I replaced by FrogToggs (leakage) with a Bilt 2-piece rainsuit which doesn't leak. It doesn't pack down as nice and small as the FT's, but again, no complaints. And I've even used some of the Freeze-Out products successfully. It is possible to find junk, of course, but a bit of care when shopping usually allows you to avoid the stuff that should be left alone.
So Cycle Gear, K&N, Bilt and Sedici are still on my "possible" lists when I go shopping for bike stuff. FWIW, so is Murph - I've dealt with him successfully as well.

I never said their stuff was junk. I just haven't shopped there since they changed brands. Heck, most of their stuff has a 5+ year warranty...
I'm actually contemplating the purchase of a Bilt or Sedici jacket for my 13 year old daughter. She's not done growing, so it would be a waste of money buying her brand name ridding gear. Ideally I need something mesh with an inner/water resistant liner.
-
guys , its 6 filters from murphs at 88 bucks, not 8.
-
I'm perfectly happy with my BILT leather gloves. Much cheaper than the premium gloves, and they last nearly as long. They have good protection too.

Exactly right. $14.67 per filter.
So I figured while I was in there I'd pick up a KNN 303 oil filter for the Connie. 14.99??? HELLO, WTF???
32 cents extra to have it today instead of three-five days from now seems reasonable to me, and I'm no
big fan of CG, and I'm a satisfied customer of Murph's, so.....?

Yup... $11, basically. I wish my other bike used the same size... wouldn't THAT be convenient. Now I want to go look and see if somehow they'd work...

Well I was hoping to hear about: Naw, I pay half that for those filters at reputable performance establishments (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)
I checked the link you supplied and it would cost me $16.12 with standard shipping for one. So if I need one in a hurry I'll go with my local CG $16.23 w/tax (yeah it will hurt, and teach me to plan ahead). If I'm not in that much of a hurry and want at least 3 (to get the free shipping) then at $10.78 Amazon it is (sorry Murph), at least until I hear more about these 50% off deals. $7.50??
-
In Murph's defense, he does not charge extra for shipping. I am sure he adds to the price to compensate for the cost of shipping. I do not shop Amazon and do not know what they charge for shipping. So when you figure the shipping costs to your total cost it is probably pretty close.
For instance, I ordered the six piece well nut set from him and it cost $11.50 shipped. Ron Ayers had them for I think around .32C each and I could have ordered any quantity I wanted. I never did get the price for shipping. I grow tired of web sites that want you to go through the registration process just to get a total shipped price of their product. So I may have spent a couple of dollars more in this case and now will have six extra well nuts since my son found the one I was missing. The upside is Murph ships quickly, supports us, and has a great reputation. Maybe I will make someone's day and give a needing person a well nut and make their day better.
-
I like my Bilt waterproof pants and Bilt Solar Helmet fine. The pants are the only pants I have owned that are actually waterproof. My wife has Bilt pants and boots as well and she is very happy with both.
-
I have mixed feelings for Cycle Gear. They are very close and that makes them convenient. They also also offer a road hazzard warranty on tires that has saved me a bunch when I ruined a tire with only a few hundred miles on it. My biggest gripe is that I have ordered a couple of things that they didn't carry on the shelf. When you order something from the store, you can forget about getting it quickly or when they say you're going to get it. Maybe that's a problem specific to my store, but it's happened more than once.

Gordon, I feel the same way about the chain. Actually, I like their built gear as they will stand behind it and switch you out right on the spot if things dont fit right, or wear out.
Special orders...forget it. Actually, you will forget you needed/wanted it by the time it arrives. As far as tires, they charge less than the local shop, but make up for it in installation charges. I thank them fo rthis as it was the kick in the ass I needed to get the equipment to change my own tires. I saved enough in the first exchange to pay for the equipment...and a balancer.
I do like buying helmets from them. After a week or two if you feel like your new helmet is too big, or small, they'll switch it out. VERY nice compared to having to sell a two week old Arai or Shoei.
-
I am using k&n oil filters as well, been buying from amazon. But as far as why, not because of the nut at the top of the filter. That isnt necessary one bit. Far too many people over tighten everything. I have been doing oil changes myself on multiple vehicles and my bike, used to do oil changes for a living for a while, and I have never needed a wrench to remove an oil filter I had put on and I have never had one of my oil filters fall off.
You should be able to install your oil filter tight enough without needing that nut to remove the filter.

:) New to the forum, just got an 08 Connie a couple days ago, but been serious long distance riding since '76. Cycle Gear made the very top of my good people chart last weekend. Was making a run home on a saturday from Boston to Raleigh and had crossed into Maryland, just past Delaware, and I picked up a nail in the rear of my 2000 Triumph Tiger. It was about 2pm, none of the dealers nearby (there were 3 major brands dealers) would come get me, all were to busy. None would change change the tube even if I could get it there.
In fact....since I was looking at Connies, I finally (at about 3:30), called the Kawi dealer back and offered to buy a new 2012 outright if they'd wait for me to limp the tiger there....about 40 mins drive (only 20 miles but I'd be riding a rear flat). They said no, we close at 5pm and that's not enough time to prep a new bike, and they wouldn't stay open late just to sell one new bike. Fugggggggg.
Finally I asked Siri to look for a Cycle Gear, there was one right near the Kawi dealer. It was about 4:20 now...they had a tube and tire, but they don't pull wheels off bikes. I limped over there, got in about 45 mins before closing. One of the counter guys drove me out to a pep-boys to buy the one tool I was missing (19mm socket and drive for the axle nut). Looked the other way while I pulled the rear in their parking lot, stayed open late to change out my stuff, then hung around to make sure I got everything back together. Bought a new Shoei 1100 while I was there, and some farkles, bein old and a bad ticker I was done for the day and ended up stayin a hotel.
3 dealers told me to **** off. Cycle Gear squiders took care of me, I'll give 'em my business whenever I can now.
Duck.

I agree.
The nut is about convenience, not more torque.
K and N have the hole through the nut ready for track day safety wiring is what got me hooked on the superior brand, not that i track my Connie but i did my sportbikes.

The flip side to that is that you might be buying a helmet that someone else wore for a couple of weeks. Certainly they don't just throw them away :o
-
I do have one very good experience with Cycle Gear. A few years ago I went in to look at helmets. They had a closeout special on last year model Arai graphic helmets, but didn't have the one I wanted in the store. They tracked one down in San Jose, California (I'm in the Plano, Texas store) and had it shipped in for me--no extra charge. Of course, it took longer than they estimated, but in the end they did the work to get me what I wanted.
I can't knock them for stocking mostly Bilt products. It is their store brand so they probably make a higher profit from it. When you also factor in that it's usually a lot cheaper than other brands, I'd be willing to bet that more than half the people who go in buy the Bilt brand to save money. They're just stocking what most of their customers are buying. (I have no data to back that up, but from a price standpoint I'd be surprised if it wasn't the case).
One thing I would be curious to know is how fast their shipping is with online purchases. I've never bought anything from them online, but they have a really wide selection. Maybe I should try this next time I want something that's not on the shelf.

I like CG, but in this case, you're not looking hard enough.
Agreed.
Personally, I am not that impressed with CG. The store here is about 75% "cruiser" stuff. For example, when I was looking for a silver or grey jacket, they had exactly zero. You could count non-black, non-leather choices on one hand.

That is why I buy from them as well when ever possible!! They go above and beyond to ensure you are taking care of. I went there on a Sunday and arrived about 3 mins after they had closed. The guy at the counter came over to the door unlocked it and let me in to get the parts I needed before my trip early Monday morning. Most places would not do that including the Kawi Dealer... Most places are chasing you out 5 mins before they close. I do make them price match my oil and other items though as I don't like to pay more then I have too.
-
The flip side to that is that you might be buying a helmet that someone else wore for a couple of weeks. Certainly they don't just throw them away :o
They did tell me the "used" helmets get sent back to the main warehouse. No idea where they go from there. I found no evidence they were being re-sold at the store, but who knows? I imagine the liability of selling a "used" helmet would scare any major chain away from doing so.

Well, it looks like I need to retract the nice things I said about the Bilt gloves. The 2nd pair fell apart after about 6 months and 5-8k miles. The local CG said the Bilt 5-year warranty would not cover "hard use". I raised a fuss and said that a 5-year warranty didn't mean much if wearing the glove for 6 months was considered hard use. My goodness, is the glove only covered if we leave it wrapped and sealed in a drawer? Anyway, they finally agreed to give me credit for the purchase price and a 10% discount on a different pair of gloves. I picked up a pair of Sedici gloves, and they seem to be better quality. Although it is only anecdotal evidence, it may be that CG/Bilt has decided that the 5-year warranty is no longer as generous/necessary as it was at first. I'm guessing that there may be some negative feedback if that attitude persists.

Very unfortunate you had to find out 1st hand Cycle Gear brand stuff is pure junk in comparison to legit brands.
I dunno if these boys would even come get it:

I've had good luck dealing with my Cycle Gear in Draper, UT. Pretty much no questions asked if an exchange was needed. I'll keep buying from them as they are one place who actually stocks gear instead of offering to order it. I'm not opposed to ordering, but I've never been able to fit gloves in the mail.
As far as the built stuff goes...yep, it sure is cheap when its on sale.

Very unfortunate you had to find out 1st hand Cycle Gear brand stuff is pure junk in comparison to legit brands.
I dunno if these boys would even come get it:

'Lizabeth? Lizabeth? Can you hear me? I'm comin' home. :) (or at least that's how I remember it)
Again, I'm more disappointed in the warranty treatment that with the product quality. And they did make it good when all was said and done. Which is more that Mama K did with my "flying saddlebag".
I will still shop at CG, and may well buy more Bilt gear, but will be a bit more skeptical about the "warranty". I still have/am using a few other Bilt products and will see how it goes. Hopefully the quality is better and the "warranty" won't be needed.

I use CG because they offer a %30 discount for MSF instructors on most anything they stock or can order. Heck, I picked up 3 tire tubes, a patch kit, and a free set of barely used (Mold **** are still there) tires for the KLR today, all for $46!! Tires were free, a guy wanted more aggressive knobbies and just wanted them to pitch em!! I asked and they said sure, after all the money I've dropped there I think they felt almost sorry for me :o So, new tube for the front, new tire for the rear and I'm ready for the WABDR ;D Wanna guess what I'll be doing tomorow?
