Title: THis goes out to all the stupid people........
Post by: feelergaugephil on March 23, 2012, 09:43:26 PM
**** NOT DIRECTED AT THIS FORUM*******

So, I had my 08 Connie up for sale at my local dealership (I'm friends with the manager) so I get a call from the sales guy who said there's a guy here that's interested in your bike and would like to talk with you, so I jump on my ZRX12 (by the way is MINT) and pull up at the dealership....
The interested guy is about 45ish and wants to know all the details about the Connie, ie, problems, history, faults......
I told him basically that he could get on this bike and ride to California then onto Canada and back with no worries, I then went under the seat and pulled out the handbook and in the back is where I have written everything I have done at every mileage, showing oil changes, tires, spark plugs and the valve shims service......

So he sits on it and I start it up, (it has the usual clacking for less than a second) of which I told him that it was the camchain tensioner building pressure and that most of the Connies did that, his face is not impressed!!!! then he looks at the mileage, his face was in disgust! he advises "its got 29,000 miles on it"   "Nope, don't want it, the engines got too many miles on it" I instantly came back with "this engine is just about broke in, these suckers go over 100K"  he replies "not with me on it" I then point to my ZRX and said " how many miles you think thats got on it" he replies "huh, I dont know 5 or 6 thousand" "NOPE! its got 138 THOUSAND MILES! I GUESS THATS TOO MANY MILES ASWELL!!!!!!!!"

He then calls me a liar and that there's no way its got 138K, I turned round to him and said, obviously you know fu** all about engines, go buy a Harley or something, at which time he stormed off and..........................................................................
Got on his HARLEY!!!!!!!!   oh that made me laugh........ anyway, rant over.........

LOL!  He thinks 29,000 miles on a 2008 Kawasaki is too much; and on a Concours to bat??!!!!  Yep, he absolutely deserves a Harley.

My C-10 has the mechanical odo, it says 70k something. I'll pull in for gas or some cheesy-poofs, someone will see the gauge and remark "wow, lotta miles!" I say "it's rolled over once."

Then it's "when didja rebuild it?" and I reply "I put a hot cam in it about 20k miles ago, and a few seals and some wheel bearings through the years."

"How old?" "Bought it new in '94."

Deer in the headlight, mouth ajar, shaking head...

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to ride a Harley for 29K! It might be good for birth control though.

I hope that guy never looks at Gold Wings, 100,000 miles on a 5 year old wing is nothing.
My son has a Harley Ultra Classic, he think riding  to the Laughlin river run is a long ride. It's about 300 miles for him, I did that Thursday when I went for a day ride on my concours.

Hell I rode 500 miles in the rain last Friday FOR BEER!!  I rode to a specialty liquor store to pick up some suds.  I've only got 28,000 on my 08.  But I working on fixing that!  I can't wait for 100K!

I was with a friend when he picked up his new Harleys. I remember the salesman telling him, "You can get 50-60,000 miles out of these before needing a rebuild..."  If the guy heard similar, 29,000 would sound like  a lot.

According to our local Harley dealership, anything over 800 per year on a trade-in is considered excessive mileage.

That's about 16 50 mile weekends. Just about the riding season.  :rotflmao:

If the guy who was looking at phil's bike wanted to know the miles on the bike he should have asked the dealer!

As for Harley's you can easily get more than 50-60K miles out of a Harley before rebuilding.

Selling used bikes with more than 10k miles is hard. Especially if the customer has a basis of comparison ( like a showroom full of new bikes ) Unless its a Goldwing or a BMW. That's just the way it is. Be prepared to wait and negotiate.

C14Painkiller said it all, "you can't fix stupid".  Well, nearly all, allow me to add, "Never argue with stupid people, they'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience".  In addition to my C14 and others, I still frequently ride my 34 year old Yamaha XS11 and it has just shy of 250,000 miles on the odometer and the engine has never been touched other than a very occasional valve check and an even more occasional valve adjustment.  Good oil, good oil filters, good air filters and Japanese quality will take you a long way.  Especially with an engine of large displacement as they are seldom working hard.

i dont understand the animosity you guys have for harleys and their riders. i have a 2004 dyna wide glide  as well and after 35k miles it hasnt had any problems, none.  I can tell you from my experience that the sport class riders seem to be bigger **** than the harley guys. When i pull up to a bunch of harleys and park they are always friendly and comment on the bike. As for a harley being a form of birth control, thats bull****. when i shine up the harley and take it out bar hoppin i get beautiful babes constantly wanting to sit on it and take pictures. when i take out the connie i get zip / nada.     i think all the negativity the sport class has for harleys and their  riders is ridiculous and shows a level of immaturity that needs to be addressed

Chicks at the bar are very well known for their knowledge of motorcycles.   Just sayin'.

When I was shopping for my first bike my wife (a very discerning woman) said in no uncertain terms that if I got a Harley she would never, absolutely never, ride with me.
My freinds who ride Harley go for their saturday rides and cover up to 50 miles.  Yeah tough riding,  but stop at  tree or four bars along the way.  Getting a semi drunk 20 year old to sit on their bike as they stand around kicking tires isn't much of a problem.
While they're bar hopping, me and the other sport bikes have gone 300 miles, stopped for some fine dining, seen alot of sights.  The real difference in the two bikes and their riders is that the cruisers are for socializing and the tourers are for riding.  Different bikes for different people and situations.
Generally sport tourers don't rag on Harley riders untill they get all sanctimonious about how great their antiques are compared to other bikes.  Somehow they got the idea that we all wanted a Harley, just couldn't afford it. (I think that one is dealer supported)

We will now return to previously scheduled programming (op)

i dont understand the animosity you guys have for harleys and their riders. i have a 2004 dyna wide glide  as well and after 35k miles it hasnt had any problems, none.  I can tell you from my experience that the sport class riders seem to be bigger dicks than the harley guys. When i pull up to a bunch of harleys and park they are always friendly and comment on the bike. As for a harley being a form of birth control, thats bullshit. when i shine up the harley and take it out bar hoppin i get beautiful babes constantly wanting to sit on it and take pictures. when i take out the connie i get zip / nada.     i think all the negativity the sport class has for harleys and their  riders is ridiculous and shows a level of immaturity that needs to be addressed

For the record I have zero, zip, nada animosity toward Harley or the people who ride them. I do think that HD charges a 50% premium for the logo and for that reason alone, HD is not for me. Twice I have had a Harley rider tell me to "get a Harley".  But that's fine. I wish the company well and love seeing people buying American bikes.

like anyone cares about the motorcycle knowledge of a beautiful woman who wants to sit on a pretty bike and take pictures . (just sayin).
2 completly different bikes for different purposes is why i have both.  the point is the sport class riders seem to be the bigger snobs/dicks.    You think i never went to an upscale dinner on my harley?

"Generally sport tourers don't rag on Harley riders untill they get all sanctimonious about how great their antiques are compared to other bikes. "    From personal experience and reading on this forum , this statement is false.   i often ride with groups of new people and i see and hear it all the time from the sport class, never spoken to anyones face of course.  the most i hear from harley guys when a sport bike flys by is the occaasional organ donor comment.   Time to get the chip off your shoulders guys and grow up .

i agree harley is overpriced for what you get. your paying for a pretty paintjob and a harley name.  Bottom line is we are all riders and deserve respect equally.

Nope, not for me. Riders ride. They deserve my respect. Somebody parading, taking up street space for their egos... don't. HD is not about motorcycling (it stopped being about it a loooong time ago to give space for marketing, which is fine by me). They are a way of life that I don't care for, thank you.

Having lived in the Daytona Beach area since 1967, I stop at a light and some riders won't even say Hello unless YOU are also riding the same vibrating, noisy type of bike they are, (you know who you are) and yet I survived the AMF Harley Davidson age. Every block there was another one broken down.......Thankfully they were brought in to town on trailers or they would have never made it here.  Enough said. ;)

Spring is in the air, aint it time to be riding?  Really???

My best of friends owns and rides a Harley, I vowed many years ago as a joke that I would NEVER ride a Harley, still haven't broke that vow.  Another really good friend owns a Harley shop, we joke all the time, but it has never hurt our friendship.  Point is simple ride what ya own, expect some ribbing from the "Other" crowd, but don't take it to heart.  Riders/bikers, whatever ya call yourself, strap on the lid and ride.  And remember, SIlverdammit is the fastest color ;D

Boy, this got ugly.

While I've never cared for the looks of the cruiser bikes, I can appreciate what they are... a potential to escape daily life and get away for awhile, no different from how I see my bikes. Yes, some are gawdy and ostentatious, bust so are a lot of sport bikes. As for classifying riders based upon what they ride... well, I can find a cruiser rider and a sportbike rider BOTH riding like A-Holes, and THAT pisses me off, because it is part of why people (who don't ride) have sometimes poor opinions of motorcyclists. What you ride doesn't define you, but HOW you ride sure does.

Back to topic (sort of)... It does boggle my mind when I see a bike for sale that has averaged less than thousands of miles per year. This guy would seem to be one of those... have it to have it, instead of having it to ride.

Meanwhile, I'll go ride.

I'm with you bud! I don't ride for attention, I don't ride for any cause other than "I wanna go ride", I don't ride for a lifestyle, and I don't ride for anybody but me. Like minded people are fun to hangout with, even better when they actually wanna ride.

The point of the whole thing was respect your fellow riders no matter what they ride or how far they want to ride.   if im on my harley and you decide not to give me common courtesy and respect see what happens.

You know, this stated out so innocently and then went downhill from there.  I WILL NOT have members cursing at other members.  Don't like it.  Won't put up with it.  We appreciate all points of view even if strongly worded.  But no cursing.  If you have a beef, work out through the PM process.
