Title: Camera for ride videos
Post by: OCK913 on March 11, 2012, 08:23:14 PM
While in Daytona this weekend I visited a vendor booth for a company called Cobra Xtreme. The make an incredibly small camera for use in sports type applications and of course motorcycling. It is $100 less than a GoPro Hero and significantly smaller. It does not do HD video, but to simply post to You Tube or our clubs website, I really done need HD. It appears to come with every conceivable mount and accesory you could think of so I was almost sold on the spot to buy it. But I thought I would go home and do a little research first. The website is www.cobraxtreme.com (http://www.cobraxtreme.com) and the CX-51 is the model I am looking at. Anyone have any knowledge of or experience with this company?

I cant comment on the Cobra, but I sure do like my Drift HD 170 Stealth. I only paid $160 for it and it is very easy to use and seems robust.

Can't comment on that brand, I have a Contour...but here's some thoughts.

I brought my camera for Snow Skiing primarily, but have used it on my bike. Two features I'd look for if I was to buy a camera just for my bike.

1) Remote control functionality of some sort. Depending on where you mount it rear or up front, it would be nice to not have to stop to turn the camera on or off.

2) Support for external mic. When mounting the camera up front you get a lot of wind noise versus engine / exhaust music. Mounting the camera in the rear is nice. Ideally an external mic would solve that.

Few cameras support these, I think a new contour support external mics....but that would be at the top of my list.

Can't comment on the OPs brand either, but I've been researching for a while and I am leaning towards the Drift Stealth also.  I love the remote and little screen and price.   I just ordered the drift, should be here Friday.

Love my GoPro although don't really need HD either.  It's the old model so not that user friendly but I've managed to come to grips with it.  Excellent quality video and pics.

Hey Banditrider,
Where are you setting up your camera? Santa brought me a GoPro for Christmas. Am trying to determine the best place to mount my cam.

I have a ram mount on my right handle bar but it blocks the mirror a little.  And I've also got a mount that I can mount off either of the pillion pegs which sticks out far enough to see past the panniers and can face either way.

After doing some research and weighing features, I ended up ordering the new Drift HD. It should be here this week and I will review and post a video once I get a chance to try it.

The simplicity of the Drift is my favorite thing.  I used it this week for wake-boarding and skiing videos on the lake and it worked great.

Umm.... were you wearing a Harley t-shirt?
Thanks for the video. I wanted to see a sample of the quality and that did it. Do you remember if that was 1080 or 720 and how many frames per second you had it set on for that vid?

720, not sure about fps.

And yes, I have a lot of Harley shirts and I love to wear them on my C-14!   I sold my Road Glide for the C-14...

Just ordered the Drift Stealth from B&H. Already have the standard Drift and love it as my helmet cam. Used GoPros for several years until the Drift came out. The GoPros are no longer recording video, only stills and sequence capture. I've beat the crap out of them! Stepping up to the HD version of the Stealth will be nice. Especially at the B&H price!

I just got my new Drift HD (ordered from Crutchfield) and I am considering options for the best place to mount it. I really like MGvalerio's ability to rotate the camera in the event there is something to see other than directly in front. I am not as creative as he is so I opted to buy more stuff. Today I ordered the brake/clutch reservoir cover with RAM ball mounts, a small arm, and the camera mount from Motorcycle Larry. This will allow me to place the camera behind the windshield if I want to or off to the side of it and also allow me o rotate it if thescenery calls for it. I think the stuff is too expensive, but they had the items that accomplish my goals so I went for it. After it all arrives and I get it mounted I will post some pics and vids.

Sorry for the drkness, I snapped these real quick in the garage. I plan to take her out tomorrow and I'll post some better pics and a video of the view. But for now, here is my Drift HD with RAM ball mount on an MCL brake reservoir cover.

Played around with my son's GoPro Hero today. It's what he uses for motocross and it does well for that. Good video I thought for not being HD. I did find it hard to turn off/on or record. Lost some ride-time video because I thought it was recording but it wasn't.

Dang, I didn't see that booth, was that at Destination Daytona? We popped in there on Sunday on the last weekend. Some had already packed up and left, perhaps they were one of them.
