There was what I would call a whole lot of metal in the oil. I have done a lot of first oil changes and have never seen oil like that come out. Anyone else think the same on their first oil change? Was surprised that the oil plug had a soft aluminum looking washer instead of a compression washer on it, I assume it is reusable?

Normal for the first change and maybe the second depending on frequency. Washer can be re-used. There's another post on that subject.... ::)

yeah I saw it after I posted sorry

Happens to me all the time. No worries.

How many miles on the bike at the change?
-
I had my first change at 200 miles. The next was at 1800. From what I recall there may have been some silvery stuff at the 1800 mile change (but not as much).

440

My first due soon. Btw, was told by my Kaw Service rep not to use K&N oil filters, said the air filters are OK but with oil filters they have see more than enough engine related issues that seem to point at those filters. I mention it because I was at Cycle Gear last week and a fellow 2011 C14 rider was purchasing one. Not sure on the validity of this but my service group is reputable so I'm taking their advice. Also, with them, you can buy your own parts and have them install so I know that's not the issue.

I would think that is BS big time. I've been using the K&N 303 that is specified for this engine and in 46k miles it hasn't burned a drop of oil.
A lot of us use this filter and I haven't heard any reports of engines being messed up. I'm sure that K&N would like to know as well.
Here is where you can contact them. I'm sure they would like to talk to the Kwak service rep about that statement.
