Anybody use Murphs valve adjusting tool? I am just curious if it is worth purchasing.
-
I haven't used it, but it's on my list of wanted tools.
-
I bought it and it's handy for getting to #2 and #3 because they're under the frame. It would be really useful for $13.
You can do the same job with a stubby Philips head with one hand and a box end with the other hand, but the trick is managing the feeler gauge with your OTHER hand... Taking the gauge leaf out of the pack and sliding it into both valves at the same time helps.
It is nice for tiny adjustments since the screwdriver shaft is a knurled plastic knob.
-
I've no better luck than to use various lengths of screwdrivers and a long handle drop head closed end wrench that is sold specifically for adjusting valves; to which I like to remove the feeler gauge from to pack as that makes it easier to handle.
-
It didn't really help me any, i found that a good screw driver and box end wrench worked better for me but it might help with small initial adjustments
-
What size wrench would I need for the nut?
-
10mm wrench for valve adjuster nuts

I did time as a shop mechanic some time ago. I found that most of the time, the "special" tools like this were not any easier to use, once you got the hang of doing the job. YMMV of course.

I have one that I bought somewhere. Not sure it is Murphs.
(Basically a socket with a short handle and a attached Screwdriver with a small knob).
Have used it many times. To me it really simplifies the adjust.

......+1....

I have it but rarely use it. I like the wrench and screw driver the best.

Me too. I used a similar tool but didn't like it as well as screw driver and wrench.
-
Like others have said, you can do the job without it, but
it works well and fits nicely in the toolkit I carry on road trips.

Really?
last time I did an adjust on a conni I used a regular flat blade S/D.... ;)
and as for the tool, it's nice, but I always carry the 10mm end wrench, and screwdrivers in my kit....I don't feel the need for carrying a "special tool"....besides, I still haul around spare J-boxes on rides, even though I ride a C14....and brake levers, and wire, and ....... ;D

Sure, you know, one of those heavily modified, TWO blade Philips heads. Who the heck was Philip anyway???
