Title: Best quick disconnect for givi e55 on Phil's rack?
Post by: kawacop1642 on January 24, 2012, 08:27:20 AM
Purchased a Phil's rack a while back and now am about to install a Givi e55 top case. Will have to hard wire the light kit that comes with the case and was wondering if any of you could give any suggestions on a quick disconnect system for this.

BTW, I found a pretty decent deal on the e55 at pca-one.com.
Got the case with brake lights, and foam liner for $359.10. + Free shipping and no tax!

Tricks of this install would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

I used a four pin trailer light plug for my lights.  It has worked perfectly for over a year now.  I also used some black shrink tubing and wire loom to "hide" it.

That's a decent price. I'm still contemplating between the NT and regular model. Also, do I get the 46L or 55L? Decisions, decisions...

I used the stock Givi wiring connector.  I 'mounted' the bike side of the connector directly into my Phil's rack so that when I attach the Givi to the rack the electrical connection for the brake light is automatically made.  When I remove the Givi case, I put the Givi connector 'cap' on the connector.  Positioning the connector onto the rack was a bit tricky to make sure it all lined up correctly, but it sure wasn't impossible.  If you remove the connector from the bottom of the Givi first it allows you to mark the rack easily.  I can post a picture of the finished product tonight if you want- the pictures are on my computer at home.

Hey Oregon,
I looked at both also, and think the only difference was the depth. They can both hold two full face helmets.

Armyguns,
I didn't know you could install the light kit that way with phil's rack. Sounds like a plan. The Pics would help.

I thought about the trailer harness as I have one in my garage. Also a good idea.

Thanks guys.

My main reason for using the trailer harness was the availbility for replacement parts and low cost.  I think I spent $10 for wiring to install the lights on my Givi.

I have the Givi E55NT Maxia3 case and decided to go with the Admore Lighting kit as I wanted the quick disconnect that comes with this kit, and the blinker functionality.  Take about 30 seconds to put on or remove from the bike.  Brilliant.

Here are a couple of pictures of the hole that was drilled in the rack, and the connector placed in the hole.  What isn't shown is I found it was necessary to put a 'spacer' under the connector to raise it up enough to make reliable contact with the mating connector that is in the bottom of the Givi.  I used an o-ring that I had on-hand.  Once it was all done and I verified everything worked, I used a little clear silicone caulking on the underside of the rack to hold the connector in place.  More than 10,000 miles later and it is still in place and functional.  I figured that Givi put that connector in the bottom of the case, and provides the mating connector, so I might as well use them!

Thanks for the info and pics, Armyguns. I think this is definately the way to go. Looking at the position of the drilled hole, one might think it would interfere with the strength/integrity of the rack, but after 10,000 miles I guess not.
  Great set-up!

Thanks again

Mark

I sure wish Givi had coordinated the location with me.  ;D  It sure falls in the worst possible spot. I've been asked about this application lots of times and I always recommend a small pull apart connector. I have a Givi on my scooter and it has a 2 part plastic connector similar to something you'd find at Radio Shack.

Those spring plugs are nice, but I hear they quit working after a while. Replacements are ~$40.00.  :-[

I just purchased my rack from Phil on Monday; It's scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I also bought the e55nt from PCA. I will buy an AdMore kit and pay to have the top painted once my pocketbook recovers a little. The kit comes with it's own plug...

I recieved the SW-Motech kit from phil yesterday, (thanks Phil) and am receiving my E55 tomorrow. Will look at different install options everyone has given me concerning the lights. I did consider the Admore lighting but, for me I'm comfortable with just the extra brake lighting. Most of my riding is during the daylight hours. Even when I travel. And since I'm retired I do ALOT of traveling.
If just the brake light doesn't workout, I will definately spend the extra on the Admore kit.

Well, just got back from a ride. Everything works great! The box fits perfect on phils rack (no pun intended) and matches the bike really well. The lights aren't that bright in the sunlight, but they serve their purpose.

I used the same install method as Armyguns, (thanks again brotha) works great.

Now, next step is to come up with a trailer hitch design for this thing.

I would not wash the plate for obvious logical reasons, your plate can now break.

I just purchased the Givi E55 with light kit installed. Can you tell me how to remove the light plug so I can mark Phil's rack to drill and mount the wiring harness?

What size drill bit did you use? Any recommendations on the whole process?

Thanks

Does the Givi case come with lights? If they don't, was the Admore kit hard to install?

You can get it with lights, but I went with the case and got the Admore kit, which has blinkers as well.  It was very easy to install.

Emailed Admore today and they replied they are going to have a "plug n play" wiring harness for the Concours by the end of this month.

How many wires are there on the Admore light kit???

There are 5 at the plug:

Ground
Running
Brake
Left
Right

6 at the bike:

Ground
Power
Running
Brake
Left
Right

You combine the power and running at the bike if I'm not mistaken...

Wow, I was thinking 2-3. A trailer wiring harness would only accommodate 4 correct?

I have a four pin trailer harness on my bike that I use to power my Givi lights.  I love the fact that if I have problems I can stop at any auto parts store to fix it.

Correct. Trailers generally don't have running lights. They have Left, Right, Brake and Ground.

This is like Admore uses:

A trailer wired for traditional US made cars/trucks actually has taillight circuit, a return (ground) and a left and right turn signal circuit that is also is used as a brake circuit. To use a 4 wire set up would require a multiplexer in the circuit because of the separate brake circuit on a bike.

Usually can find a small round 5 wire connector at RV dealerships.
