Post by: firetruck41 on May 17, 2011, 05:30:32 PM
why are they so high in texas. best rate for me, at age 61 is $1070 per year. clean record, senior citizen. go figure.
have shopped around. my quote was from a guy who writes for progressive here in texas. I hate it when companies try to control you.

Don't know but I have Progressive here in Arkansas for under $500.00.

Might be worth the time to shop around.

53. setx. clean record. progressive full coverage + injury + uninsured = $584
full coverage w/o injury / uninsured = $249
i've been with them for so long i have "diamond" membership.
sometimes that whole shopping around thing will cost you discounts for loyalty/longevity

Are you a member of AARP? If so get a quote from Foremost thru AARP.  They had the best price by far that I could find.
Full coverage with $300,000 in liability for just over $500 a year.

I live in Texas and I just switched my policy to Progressive.  41 YO male, homeowner, married.  No tickets/accidents, DL with motorcycle endorsement.

Got a 100k/300k liability policy with UM/UIM coverage of 30k/60k, collision and comprehensive coverage with 1k/1k deductibles and road side assistance for $321 annually.

Liability only would have cost $140.

You can get a quote and purchase online in 10 minutes.

It will depend on what county you live in.  Dallas, Harris, Travis and Bexar counties will be higher than others.

Dallas area resident, 25 years old, clean record, 2011 Connie is around $450 a year with allstate. Also have another bike plus my house and truck with them so I'm sure that is helping. But, they blew all other companies away when I switched a little over a year ago.

It seems like I already just posted this a while ago.  Not Texas, but useful for comparison:

VA, 40-something, male, unmarried, clean record, full coverage, 2011 Concours, State Farm:

Liability $100k/person $300k/accident $50k/property $100 deductible
Collision $250 deductible
Comprehensive $100 deductible
No medical (I have health insurance)

$432/yr

If you haven't checked with Dairyland, that would be worth a shot.  I had progressive for a couple months since USAA sent me to them since they don't offer MC insurance to service members.  I saved over $500 a year by switching to Dairyland and getting the exact same coverage.

Definitely try Foremost thru AARP.

Am 54 and nearly killed myself and totaled a car last September with total insurance payout around &100k to fix me and replace car and told Foremost all this and they smoked everyone for full coverage on my brand new 09 two weeks ago. 100/300/100, comprehensive, uninsured motorist, 5000 medical and $500 deductible was $590/year. Progressive and everyone else with less coverage was double.

It cost me $40 more a month to insure than my 2007 GSXR 750. I just don't get it.

Dallas county is the problem

I'm not surprised.  When I moved from Dallas to Collin county 12 years ago my auto insurance dropped by about 50%.

I'm at about $300 yr. for full coverage for the connie, liability for the brute force 750 and her scooter with geico. It varies to much though. My gl1500, kz1300, and klr650 are insured with progressive. There seems to be no consistency with these people so I go with whos cheapest for the vehicle in question. I'm 48 and in the tucson area

Los Angeles.   My MC insurance is with AAA for $450 yr.  Best I could find.

I would definitely shop around. I was with Dairyland, but Progressive came in cheaper this time.

Also, if you can live without covering the bike, you'll save a boatload. Adding collision/comprehensive more than doubles the cost. When I first started riding, I dropped property coverage for my sportbike because I would have been paying for a new bike every few years in premiums and my premiums dropped to about 1/3 of what it had been.

The big metro and joining counties in TX cost you... other factors include; homeownership, occupation, FICO credit score, and the obvious tickets and claims.  Shop around and you may find a cheaper company... make sure you are comparing apples to apples in coverage.

When you shop around and they check your FICO score (they all do anymore), it's a soft hit on your credit record, so they will not count against you, like applying for credit cards.  Just a FYI.

Just moving from Katy TX to Brighton CO, my rates dropped from ~$900 a year to $230.

I have 500 combined single limit liability and UM with $2,500 Med Pay, with comp and collision on a VFR800 and V-strom.    If I add same coverage for a 2011 C14, through progressive, it'll up my coverage $912 per year.    The UM is a killer.  I am 57 and live in Louisiana.

You did start out saying that you thought your insurance was high because you're in Texas  -- we just wanted to let you know your insurance isn't high just because you live in Texas.

If you didn't want to hear the answer, you shouldn't have asked the question......

Us Canadians understand everything is bigger in Texas (well most things ;D) higher insurance rates included LOL. Up here in the great white north I pay $671 a year for full coverage, we have to pay year round even though we are lucky to ride in a good year 7 months.

It was a thread just like this that prompted me to check around and compare rates. I switched from State Farm (~$400/yr) to Allstate (~$180/yr) for slightly better coverage.

That's Harris county... Houston, TX basically... that's the way it is... BTDT.  Like I stated earlier, just moving to another state dropped my rates by over 2/3's.

When I took delivery Thursday I called my Allstate agent, gave him the vin # and went through the 4 or 5 questions.  He said since I had a Vrod and a couple Spyders on the policy that my Connie would cost me an additional $16.90 a year!!!!! I couldn't believe it, he said the rational behind it is that you can only be riding one at a time, so they cut you a break!
