Title: Picked up a new toy
Post by: Y0ssarian on November 04, 2011, 03:25:32 AM: I picked up a new toy to play with. To be honest, it's not really a toy; I'm going to do a ton of work to it and try and make some money from it. Also, having it sitting in the garage on two tires prevents me from pissing the money away. Anywho...
1985 Ninja 900; 22,000 miles for $1300. Looks good from a distance, runs like crap. The PO had no idea how to take care of a bike, so everything needs adjusting. I've done the valve adjustment and removed, cleaned, set the float heights on and re-installed the carbs; I'll sync them tomorrow. Then it needs a ton more stuff!

Yeah that's it.

Regardless that would be a fun bike to own today; do nothing more than period upgrades to keep it classic....

Jeez; you sound like my neighbors! This happens every year...we have two different species of maple, one in front and one in back, that hold onto their leaves longer than any other trees in the neighborhood. And I'm not doing it twice, dangit!
I'm amazed at what's available for this bike. Airtech has the three fairing pieces new, and Colorrite has the paint (it's not listed for this bike, but they've used the same color on newer bikes). There's a company in England that has almost every rubber part on the bike. You actually could do a decent resto on it...and it will be 30 years old in 3 years!

Well, they punched out the 900 to 1000 in 1986; that's the engine the C10 is based on.

Here's what I've done so far:

Set float levels
Set valves
Sync'd carbs
Lubed & adjusted steering head bearings
Lubed speedo cable
Changed fork oil
Flushed front brake fluid
Flushed rear brake fluid
Flushed clutch fluid
Changed rear shock oil
Lubed the rear linkages
Cleaned, lubed & adjusted the chain

I just got the plugs & oil filter, so those are next. The air filter is a K&N, so I'll wash and oil it. It's amazing how well it runs now...
