Title: No temp guage

To start out I do have a manual and I have not looked at the bike yet.
I will check the easy stuff first, wires and terminals as I have read that they can come lose and corode and cause the gauge to stop working. 
I just noticed on the ride in this morning that the gauge on my 86 was not working.  I'm bored so I thought I would ask some questions. What is involved in replacing the temp sensor? I presume it is tucked under the tank on the thermostat housing.  Does anyone have the link to common reference parts.

Well your on the right track here, wires get old and breakdown as our beloved Connies age. Watch your knuckles at the thrmo. housing, it gets tight in there, maybe a 5 yr. old is close to try to check the connections.

whats the sensor on the clutch lever side of the radiator? water level?

That would be the temperature sensor for the fan.

You can check the gauge by pulling the wire off of the sender unit on the thermost housing and jumpering it to ground.  The dash needle should peg to full scale.   If it doesn't the problem is somewhere other than the sender unit.  Good Luck

After Leo's test, if it is the sender, I recall a few people have noted that the crimped on end piece works its way loose.  It can be tightened back up with a hammer (lightly) and punch/drift with sometimes good results.
