Hello everyone - I have my new pipe-PC5 and was curious about taking the flies out. I did it on my 08 and it worked great. Do not know if removal may cause a issue with anything on the 2011. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Affects the traction control I think. Might want do a search on ECU reflash.

There are integral to the control system. See Fred's videos below.

I pulled them on my 2010, which is the same bike. No issues to speak of.
-
No Issues on my 2010 either. Traction control still works.

Pulled them on my 2011. Everything still works. No problems.

You are partially neutering the traction control when you take out the flies. Yes, it will still work partially, but the flies are supposedly the most important control is has over the system. With them removed or disabled, [it is my understanding that] it will greatly diminish the performance of the traction control system on the 2010/2011.
-
Not necessarily- traction control works by controlling the secondary 'flies, fuel and ignition. Even with the 'flies removed the ECU has complete control over fuel and that alone is sufficient to reduce power output to zero if the programmers wrote the code that way.
I do not have traction control on my C-14 but am curious as to how it would work with the 'flies removed. There were three posters in a row who claimed T.C. is still effective with the 'flies removed so I am inclined to believe that is the case.
Have you had T.C. fail or work poorly after removing the 'flies?

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound too authoritative. I am repeating an opinion formed from previous postings on various forums, stuff I saw in the factory manual, discussions with my mechanic friend, and some logical conclusions. I, personally, have zero experience with removing or disabling the secondaries.
I don't doubt the TC still works, I was just asserting that [supposedly] it would not work as well, since the "flies" are an important part of the system. I better qualified my previous posting. Thanks

To be fair, The number of times the Traction control kicked in between removing the flies and my little canine incident are few. Maybe 2 or 3 times at most. But I do not remember it being much different than before. Most of the times the Ktrac kicks in is slow speed as I try to navigate the mud puddles separating me from the highway. I've only had it kick in a couple times while riding and that was before I pulled the secondaries.
-
Mine only kicks in on gravel roads and most of the time I have to intentionally engage it just to see if it actually works. It works just fine with the flies removed. Unless you are intentionally trying to flog it the only way you know it engaged is the display flashing and a lack of power momentarily.
-
Beyond the potential impact of traction control, you have to also consider the need to adjust fuel with a power commander to get best performance. Add it all up and the Flash approach is more cost effective, less moving parts and simple.

The OP already has the Power Commander V. This would be a no-cost modification for him.

I would go for the flash myself, a PC just works inline with the fuel injectors and modifies the pulses, it's an additional link in the chain that adds unnecessary complexity (IMHO)
By getting the Guhl Motors flash, they have programmed the system to open the flies pretty much immediately and no extra wiring to worry about and no flies to remove...

I agree with you Marc. Guhl re-flash is the route I'll be taking, too.

Anyone know if Guhl Motors still exsists?
I have written to them twice asking about the cost of a re-flash and postage but heard nothing back??
Going on leave in December so could post them my ECU and it could be done and posted back while I'm away but I cant get a reply?

Have you tried Dynotronics?
-
No, have you got a web address please?
-
http://www.dptune.com/index.html (http://www.dptune.com/index.html)
Their website doesn't say much about motorcycles but they do flash them. Dynotronics made a few posts on the Forum about it. Most were on the old forum and since lost.
-
Have you tried calling Guhl, I didn't have any problems. They flashed it and it was on the truck before I called to see what the status was.
-
Guhl is still around, odd that you had a problem reaching them as they have been working on fine tuning the maps,
One of the biggest advantages to their map as opposed to a PC, is that it only affects the normal mode, so for the 2010+ bikes, the ECO mode map remains untouched, that way you can have your power for playing and then fuel economy when you are slabbing etc...
-
Its why I'm keen for then to do the re-flash.
I have emailed them twice but perhaps because I'm down in NZ its gone to his junk mail??
Could you ask him to check an say I'm the Kiwi trying to get hold of them for a price inc postage?
many thanks
KG

I would suggest calling them instead of emailing... If you post on the other forum (forum.cog-online.com) I believe Fred Harmon speaks to them all the time

Kiwi Graham,
If you need assistance send me a PM, I'm sure we can figure something out. I'm an Aussie living in MA.

Hi Stewart,
Thanks, I got hold of Bob (Armyguns) and he is onto it for me, he is a bit busy cleaning up from a certain bitch called Irene at the moment though.
If no joy I'll be in touch
