They're cool and a pretty fun ride.  I test rode one last fall at IMS show and had one pre-ordered.  Ended up not wanting to wait and bought a kTM Adventure.  Only reason I sold it and am holding off on another Adv bike is 99% of the riding available to me is paved.  Not really much available land to ride around me, YMMV.  Everything around me is private and fenced =no fun Adv riding for me.  :(

I had a V-Strom that served me well, it took me all over the US, including a trip to Alaska and in to Mexico and never let me down during the 60,000 miles I put on it.
I have a Super Tenere ordered and should be getting it this week. I'm expecting it to be everything the V-Strom was and then some with its much more advanced technology, ABS, rraction control, shaft drive and selectable sport or touring modes.
I getting excited just knowing it will soon be here.

I saw one a few weeks ago before they were available on US soil when i was on my crazy USA ride.  This Aussie nut shipped it here from down under to ride in the desert Southwest USA with us, Pics in this thread: http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=2298.0 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=2298.0)

Mine was a 2003 Yellow 1000 V-Strom. I dont usually write ride reports,  my Alaska ride was part of a group ride to Prudhoe Bay in 2004.
I went up to serve as an IBA witness for a MTF group record ride for an Ultimate Coast to Coast ride from Key West to Prudhoe Bay. 13 guys started that ride, 11 finished, the 2 non finishers crashed on the Haul road in seperate incidents.
One of the bikes that crashed was also a yellow V-Strom , NOT mine.
Heres a link to a picture of what the haul road crud looks like.

They are ginormous. The triumph tiger 800 xc is 100 lbs. lighter and much less money. Just saying........

It doesn't compete in that space with the 800's (mid size ADV bikes) and 650's (light ADV bikes).

This new bike targets and competes with the BMW1200GS/KTM 990/Tiger 1050 type rides.

That 800 XC Tiger is the one for mid-size this year (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

One of the guys who is riding with us to the arctic circle next summer has one ordered, about to arrive to day or tomorrow. If they are half as fun as this 11 year old, 60000 miles, Triumph Tiger 885i I revived, they are money!  ;D

Rode one at bike week this year -very impressed ! Doesn't feel as heavy as it is ,handles rear nice  ,comfortable riding position. Try to ride one -nicer than the 800 triples . Kind of pricey, though .

I rode them both and liked the Tenere much better.  I'm a bigger taller fella, maybe that's the difference?  I'm 6'4", 230 and have a 36" inseam.
