Title: Dim Display Screen
Post by: Wile on July 10, 2011, 11:49:21 PM
My display screen went to about 1/2 brightness.  It's happened a couple of times once it went back during a ride and the other time it went back to normal after stoping for a rest.

Anyone else see this? Or is it like the flashing F1 curse? :P

Was the sun shining on it at the time? Mine will turn dark at times when the sun is on it and heats it up.

Good point.  That is pretty typical for LCD.  LCD's are temperature sensitive.

If no sun, then take it into the dealer.  It's warranty.

The sun is possible.  Didn't happen at night.  I'll just keep an eye on it for now and note the conditions if it happens again.
Thanks all.

Timing must be everything...this just happened to me today.  It's the first really hot day I've left it parked outside.  It was back to normal by the time I made the 25 mile ride home.  Kind of scared me at first though.

if you concern with the situation, take a picture or two, just in case you need to show the dealer for warranty.

Yep, happened to me in Atlanta after leaving the bike outside at work all morning.  I went to go get lunch and had an all black LCD screen, scared the crap out of me too.  It did come back after a few miles.

Is that supposed to be circular logic of some kind?

All LCD displays will do that when they get overheated. They do not have to be in direct sunlight to fade, just get really warm.

It is not really a brightness thing, more of a contrast problem. The contrast will go back to normal after the display cools down.

UPDATE
It was a heat issue.  Smoking hot day this past Saturday.  Left the bike in the sun for a few hours and when I took off it was dim again.  Came back once it cooled off. Still the trip to Sturgis last year wasn't a trip to the Tundra.  It was very hot and it didn't go dim out there. Hmmm

I've found that it's not so much heat related as sun related. If the cluster is in direct sunlight this can happen but if the bike is parked facing into the sun so that the cluster is shaded then there is no problem.

+1...

Direct sunlight causes it on mine, had it happen on a cool crisp fall day but very sunny out.
