Title: out of state purchace
Post by: krsron on July 10, 2011, 07:57:18 PM
After selling my BMW that I owned the last 12 years, I've decided a Concours 14 is next.  How do you safely purchase out of state that both you and seller are secure.  Finding used c14 can be hard in my area.

I think Paypal is an insured $ transaction for purchases...

That is a tough one…I would never buy a vehicle sight unseen. However, if you are going to pick it up yourself things are safer. I am in VA and I sold my CBR1000RR to a guy from AL. He drove up, brought me cash and took the bike with him. This was a huge risk for him because I had to pay off the loan and then send him the title.

In such a case I would go pick it up and use a cashier’s check and bill of sale. Try to find one close to you and go get it is my recommendation. Good luck chief!

The biggest thing for me is to always make it clear you expect them to have a clear title in hand.  That means it clearly states there are no liens on the bike.  Even if they had a loan and paid it off and claim to have a notice of lien release, I would still have them send it in to their DOT and get a truly clear title.  Up here in WI I've heard of a few people making fake lien releases as they are usually just an official looking bank letter and then the new buyer getting screwed.  Also, I wouldn't take cash, I would get a cashier's check made out to the person's name and make sure that name lines up with the name on the title.  I guess I would be a little overly paranoid when talking about something that costs as much as a C14.

As for the bike itself, if you are meeting at the seller's house ask them to not use the bike the day you come to see it.  See if it starts properly cold.  If you don't trust your own expertise, try to find a friend to come with or call around and see if there is a local bike dealer you could pay an hour of labor to go over the bike.  Again, I may sound way over cautious, but I'd rather pay a little then get stuck with a $7K+ bike that doesn't work.

Have the seller take a bunch of pictures and put a deposit through paypal.  If you having buy one yet, you might want to ask around here in this forum.  I think there might be few people here ready to sell their C14 for upgrade.

up around GB I trust Team Motorsports.  They are the big dealer up here and their prices are high but eveyone is friendly and knowledgable.  Not sure about other areas though.  I guess that depends where you find one.  Team winnebagoland in Oshkosh sells them new and Kens Sports in Kaukauna has a bunch of 08 09 demo bikes for sale must have gotten a deal on them somewhere

Hey dude....I just bought a VFR1200 from Don & Roy's Motorsports in Brookfield WI, which is just west of Milwaukee. My buying experience was positive with them. I just looked and they have 2009 & 2011 C14's on sale.

This one says its a 2009, but I do believe its a 2011, bc of the fairing & windshield. Also Kaw is offering black & silver for 2011. If you look closely in the pic the 2009 is actually in the background. Either way they are both on sale....and would be an in state purchase for ya! Good luck!

There is no difference, visually, between a 2010 and 2011... so why would you think it had to be a 2011?

Reading the ad it shows the MSRP in the $14,000s and the top I saw it was showing a $2000 factory rebate which are for 2009 and prior. They show the 2011 to get you in there. Bait and switch method.

Sure there is....physically yes, they are the same bike, but....

.....the 2010 was only available in BLUE, and that bike looks black to me, and considering Kaw offers silver & black for 2011, makes sense it's prob a 2011. It is definitely NOT a 2009 tho. I think they just accidentally took pics of the wrong bike, plain & simple. When you sell 7 brands and have hundreds of different models to keep track of, sometimes the wrong pic gets taken for an ad.

Im pretty sure everyone on this forum knows way more about the C14 then prob most internet sales guys. My sales guy wasn't telling me anything new when I bought my 2010 C14. I had researched the hell out of it already.

I did a search prior to posting that last post, on colors/years, and determined that black was available in 2010.  Perhaps the info I found was wrong...

veering way off topic.....sorry.

I believe candy neptune blue/flat super black on Kaw's website is describing the two colors on the 2010 bike.

When I went to the Cycle World Bike Show in Jan 2010, Kaw had the 2010 C14 there and they had the ABS, and non-ABS bikes there, and both were blue. I didn't see a black Concours.

Oh yeah...this is the C14 we are talking about...
