Title: Funny conversation I had with a couple riding from Canada...
Post by: sherob on July 07, 2011, 10:08:11 PM
I rode from Brighton, CO up to Spearfish, SD Wednesday morning... left ~6:30am and arrived ~2:30pm... nice little ride... little construction on 14A... no real hurry.

That afternoon I was in the courtyard having a smoke and swilling an adult beverage talking to a couple that were riding around the area from Canada.  They both had their bikes out washing them... cleaning them up from their days ride.

They asked where I was from... "Denver, Colorado."

How far is that from here... "Around 400 miles."

How many days did it take for you to ride up here?  :o

I almost committed beer abuse, almost spit it out... almost.  :'(

I said I rode straight thru... around 6 hours.  The expression on the woman's face was priceless... it was like I told her I was from outerspace or something.

She offered up that 150 miles is the most that they travel in a day.  I didn't want to explain my Iron Butt plate holder, for fear of heads exploding.

You read and hear stories of these type of encounters... but I've never actually had one before.  It's like a situation out of Penthouse Forum... you just don't believe it until it happens to you.  :o

Curiosity dictates I must ask what they were riding?  Hardley-ablesons?

A guy I work with came into work on Tues ( four day weekend).  He said he was all ragged out; he put on almost 500 miles over the weekend on his HD  :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Are you insinuating that because they were Canadian they were a little tardo??
I feel a little insulted!  :P

Ouch! I can vouch for most Canadians that we aren't all quite that naive! I'm Canadian with a couple of IBA certificates and know some others as well! As far as the HD thing goes, I still own an 04 Road King and last year I went 600 miles in one day from Pendleton, Oregan to Ely, Nevada. I could have gone further but that was enough. I've decided I'd like to do things in more comfort, that is why I have a C14 now! 150 miles a day? I like to do 150 miles, then have breakfast! ;)

(Oops, I wrote this while DannyL was posting, I've met dummies from everywhere! ;D)

I had read all the other... uh... other articles.  8)

They just happened to be from Canada instead of New Hampshire... or Texas... just where they were from.  ;)

I'm sure most aren't, and yes, they are everywhere.  Where they are from wasn't even important... it's just where they said they were from, posted as part of the facts.  Nothing more... nothing less.  I know guys... even a girl who rides a HD that puts several thousands of miles on hers every year... even did her first SS1K on a Sportster.  Again... just part of the facts.

It was just an amusing/funny conversation to me.  There is nothing in between the lines about Canadians... even what they ride... it was about the conversation.  Nothing else... the end.  ;)

A friend on this forum once told me a similar story of a member of his family, you know the type, black company t-shirts, socks, shoes, hats, stickers on their cars, optional company package on their Ford truck, the whole smear. He had just returned from a 600 mile day and was at a family function where this member was telling about how much they ride, "well", she says". "We ride a lot", "we make it a Sunday thing", "Oh really, my friend says". "Oh, yeah, we get out and ride at least a whole hour every week". Funny. But they ride, thats good. But funny. I guess we must be mileage snobs.

If you guys take a gander at my history map in my signature you'll see I've been around. It's mostly from a previous life where everything was temporary. Temporary car, GF and even once and a while jobs. I'm in a different place today and have limited time to call me own. I'm a small business owner, husband/father of two boys 8-10,and as of yesterday just turned 53. My spare time is limited as you can imagine. Does that mean if I use my bike to commute I'm a wuss?
I still have the burning desire to ride around the whole North American continent another 10 times, but I know that's pretty much a dream for now....

NOTHING comes close to riding, seeing and breathing the land, except being with my family......

I'm still I'm a hardcore rider inside, I'm just doing it in short bursts!

Were they Newfies?
In all my travels the one place I really want to return to is Newfoundland. The scenery, the people, the simplicity of the life make it one of my all time favorite places I've visited!

Danny, I never got the idea from any of the responses that not riding a lot somehow makes you a wuss or a non-rider. Look at the majority of the types of bikes sold, cruisers make up the majority of the bikes sold here, not usually thought of first to get on and ride 1000 miles at a time, its done though. This forum is a sport-touring place, most folks here ride a bit more on the Concours. And, more than a few here have cruisers as second bikes. We joke, but its not intended to offend.

I'm not offended in the least, I was just pointing out time is a luxury to some folks. Other folks just want to putt around, they couldn't fathom the idea of riding long distances in a short span of time. Myself I like to ride like i'm always late even if i'm not!

I just love riding, and do not tend to get caught up in the macho "I can ride better than you can!" environment when I'm out with buddies or alone....I absolutely will not  answer a challenge, most of the time I'll just say, "You guys go on ahead, I'm just here to enjoy the ride and the scenery...."
Sometimes the entire day's ride is from my place to work and then back home, sometimes it's 4 hours, 6 hours or 8 hours to some remote location, then hang out in the hotel pool and get some R & R, then back home the next day...all done at my own pace, enjoying the 2 wheels the entire way....

Maybe they ride a super fast bike.  When they ride the ride at WFO.  They may only ride an hour but they traveled 200miles ::)

I'm not saying I know these people or the unnamed forum member, but...

I don't know about their socks (but I wouldn't be surprised if they did), but you forgot belts and high dollar, full leather riding apparel.

All that for an hour per week?  I guess I just don't get it.

+1 could not have said this better myself. Quantity vs Quality. If your riding & your smiling you must be doing something right.

When I got my first motorcycle I could only do 200 miles max. Then I had to get off for  the day. It was a Kawaski 350 triple. It was fast and fun but it was like riding with a gas weed eater in each hand.  :P   My Z-1's were a joy to go all day with and now the C-14 goes for long periods of time. A 150 miles isn't even worth it.

obviously thats not a lot of distance but if they were sight seeing or stopping for all the local attractions and not in a hurry to get anywhere then that could work.  Age and medical could be a factor too.    Or they dont have a GPS and are checking maps a lot or topping up a gas tank in foear of running out.   Being a Canadian and recently in los angeles and washington it is amazing the choices of roads you guys have there.   Too bad about your gas prices wanting to synchornize with us!!!
