Title: has anyone removed and replaced an engine
Post by: lather on June 20, 2017, 12:00:36 PM
Would like to hear first hand experiences from owners before I decide to buy a motor and put it in my 09 myself. Some may recall my recent thread about valve damage.

I admire your tenaciousness at keeping that 09 going but with so many reasonably priced low mileage C14's out there I just wouldn't think it would pay to replace the engine.

Yep, what Rhino said.

Now, that said, I do not know (or want to know) what makes financial sense to anyone else. Maybe Bob would rather save some money, and enjoys tinkering with a motorcycle, and so it would make sense for him to go that way, especially if he likes the bike he has- it is an '09 and maybe he prefers a first gen. C-14; those are not so numerous on the used market as gen. 2 bikes, so that could be a big factor.

One thing I will say though, buying an engine from anyone you do not personally know, and without knowing the history of the engine itself, is a risky business. Even if the engine comes with a guarantee and it can be returned, you (Bob) will be out a huge amount of labor and probably some part of the fairly expensive shipping to return it.

That said, please do keep 'us' in the loop because I am curious as to how you make out and honestly, would like to hear the happy ending to this story no matter what it is. You are a good guy and clearly like riding so I would like to see you end up with a reliable bike you really like, regardless of type or year or even make / brand. The very best of luck, and if I can be of any help whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my best to help.

Brian

My son helped me drop it out - transmission problem.

Or buy another used like you say, and keep the existing one as a parts bike after de-registering it.
