Title: Any one ever shipped a bike?

We are thinking about taking a trip to Banff etc from Peoria IL.  But because of time constraints and the fact that we would need new tires at some point on the trip if we rode out and back and also rode in Washington, we are considering shipping to Portland OR and doing our riding from there.

Thoughts?

Would it be cheaper to just rent motorcycles while/from there?  It might be hard to get exactly what you want, but might be a lot cheaper and certainly more convenient.
