Title: Ram Mounts ball Mount
Post by: Gixerhp on March 04, 2017, 05:39:38 AM
Here is a nice easy mod for a GPS, or Phone mount.
Using the Steering stem cap.
What i have done is Jb welded a 8/ 125 mm nut into the bottom og the steering stem cap, between your handle bars.
The Ram mount part number is http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-367U (http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-367U)
Here are the pics,

There is a company that sells a RAM mount that fits to the center bolt somehow (other than epoxy).  Of course I don't remember which right now.

My RAM mount is on the Helibars risers.  The RAM stuff works incredibly well.

You know that's not a bad idea but as much as I like JB Weld and totally trust it to get me home in an emergency (have used it to plug a radiator hole), I couldn't bring myself to use it to hold a piece of expensive equipment to the bike.

In the early years, this nut wasn't torqued correctly and it would loosen and fall off.  And as Lather would say, nothing worse than loose nuts or something to that effect.

Good idea but I must be missing something.

How are you going to torque the steering stem cap down? If I recall this thing has a pretty hefty torque value no?

Good point.  Totally missed that.   I guess you could glue it after it's torqued (close to 80lbs), but if you need to do any maintenance where it needs to come off...

This won't work if you have the Heli-bar set up.

The nut is JB welded in the bottom side of the top cap, you reinstall the top cap, torque it to spec then your ball mount goes on!

This a view of the bottom of the top cap!

Cool, I knew I saw it somewhere.  So they have a replacement nut that has a tapped bolt hole in the center.  $32 doesn't seem too bad, although it does not include the ball.

And the ball is another $11

Well ok, that'll work. What about taking the cap off if need be?

This is a great idea for a Ram Ball mount, but (IMO) not so great of a location for a GPS. You'll need almost super human self control not to end up with your head down and locked with a GPS mounted that low. Yeah I know, you never take your eyes off the road for more than split second...but eventually you will. Then when you get away with it, you'll do it more and more and eventually something will happen ahead of you that you'll miss seeing, if you're lucky you'll only scare yourself when you do, if not.....  :( :-[ :'(
In my opinion a GPS with all it's features can be more distracting than a cell phone and it needs to be much higher. If you can't devise a way to get it high in the center, it's much safer mounted high on the handlebars either left or right of center than down low in the center.

We all have opinions, and now you know mine...just pretend I'm max' typing about driving with your high beams on during the day.   ;D

Don't yell at me Max! I saw the light (sorry about that) and I don't use my high beams in the day any longer.
