Title: 08-09 where do you keep your registration?
Post by: MrPepsi on June 24, 2016, 09:56:25 AM
Those of you without a Sergant seat, where do you keep your registration and insurance? I'm not sure I like the idea of keeping it in my jacket, and no way I'll keep it in my glove box that doesn't lock. I just swapped my Sergant for my new Seth Laam seat built on an OEM seat pan, so no more compartment in the bottom of my seat. What creative places do you keep your registration?

I should also mention I don't keep my bags on often.

just keep mine in the bottom of my tank glove box under my tire gage, pen and cable lock. Who wants to steel a piece of paper?  :loco:

A piece of paper with your name and address.
Plus, my glove box is full.
Not sure why you think I'm crazy.
I even said I wasn't planning to keep it there.

I have a second wallet - actually just an ID case - super thin; and I've gotten in the habit of keeping all my ownership, insurance papers, and license in it. Less than 1/8" thick...  (and handy to have it all in one wallet when digging it out for the friendly patrol officer... :(  just the necessities, nothing more...)

I don't even notice it in my pocket anymore. Morning routine - check for watch, phone, keys, wallets, glasses, fob - I'm good to go...  Sounds like a lot, but it's habit now...

Ohio registration does not have your address on it. Just name, and bike info and if you standing at the bike that info is already available to anyone walking by. Plus they are a coated paper so it doesn't hurt it to get wet.

I keep it in my wallet too.  It's just a couple pieces of paper and you have to carry your license so that is where it stays.  I'm the only person that operates the Motorcycle so the insurance papers are always with me.

I've never kept registration and insurance in my wallet. I don't have room for it. I keep that stuff in the glove box.

EDIT: Nevermind. I'm assuming earlier than 2010 does not have a glovebox?

Under the seat under the tools in the pathetic little plastic tool case.

Yes I thought about this spot.
It might be the only solution short of keeping it in my jacket.

In a double ziploc bag, in my right sleeve wrist zipperd pocket of my stich, which also contains emergency medical info, and family contact numbers.

There is a red pull tab on that sleeves zipper with  an emergency sign on it also...

This is the place I am leaning towards.
Its always been double baggied, so this may end up being the new solution.
I miss my Sergant pocket already.

I have a Sargent seat.

I keep my license, registration, and insurance in my wallet.  And the wallet is in a fanny-pack that goes in my pannier (while I am riding the bike).

I should also mention I don't keep my bags on often.

That is a good mention.  In my case, I *NEVER* remove the bags.  It is precisely the type of reason why I have a Concours.  Now, if I didn't have panniers, I would have the wallet in either one of three places while ridding- my jacket, my pants, or a fanny-pack.

I would NEVER leave anything with my personal information, unsecured, on or in any vehicle, if I were not using/in/on the vehicle (security/privacy).  Under the seat?  Perhaps, but not very convenient.   Glovebox on the Gen C14?  Possibly, since it locks.  But I leave that completely empty except for spare keys for the helmet lock and Sargent Pod, since the panniers are all I need.

I feel Razzi looks sportier with the bags off, and it makes splitting while commuting easier to manage.
However during the winter months when I need a bit more warmth in the morning, I'll have the bags on to hold the extra gear.

Just mentioning..
If you get pulled over, for whatever, and have to stop at the discretion of the LEO involved, you may nd 9 out of 10 times, you have to park in a precarious position, where bike balance on side stand, or dismounting to root thru your bags, is a CDA waiting to happen, and the LEO ain't gonna help you upright you now horizontal machine, and even if you get a ticket, it still isn't worth dismounting for, to appease the interest of Jonny Law...

Keep it where you can retrieve it, and hand it to him... just personal experience.

Now, personally, if I am stopped, and an officer asks for registration, I simply say I have to sit here as long as you are out of your air conditioned car, here is my drivers license, I'm wearing a moon suit, go back, run my plate, and my license, and be quick about it, please officer...
If they demand an insurance card, I have it in my sleeve, but I still say, oh, no problem, is your office down the road? If not I'll show ya, but I do have 36 hours to provide that, I can stop safely and dig it out at the depot....or, pull it out and hand it to him.

I don't get stopped much.

I just got my 09, and it has a Corbin 2 piece seat. I had it under there in the plastic box for a couple weeks. I got a set of the bag liners, and there is a small pocket on the outside. I am keeping it in there now. All of my bikes have required me to get off to produce registration, so this has been no issue on this one either. I have always been respectful to LEO, even if I was pulled over for gross infractions. I once got pulled over doing 40 plus above posted with a passenger. ( it was a 25 zone on a beautiful curvy road )   Long story short, I was let go with a stern warning.

Well, not really.  You made it require getting off, since you could just carry it on your person, instead.

In my money clip credit card holder. License, registration, CC, Health Ins card. In a pinch i have folded them up and stuck them in a helmet liner.

+1 on the bags off, but I like to ride with my top box on to hold the extras. Hoodie, neck warmer, winter gloves, lunch tin for work....You know what I mean.

Don't carry a wallet, just a small pocket knife/money clip. Papers stay in my jacket pocket. If I leave the jacket on the bike(locked with a cable) the papers go in my pants pocket with the helmet coms. Some times it's a pain but I've lost two helmets and two jackets by leaving them on the bike unlocked. That was a real pain, $1200.00 and explaining to the LEO why we were riding without helmets(to the nearest bike shop). The LEO was kind enough to escort us to the shop and no ticket.

... Some times it's a pain but I've lost two helmets and two jackets by leaving them on the bike unlocked.

One of my fears...

I have a big head and am limited in my helmet choices...

Not many bike shops actually have 4X helmets in stock...  I usually carry it with me...  I know... It's not convenient, but neither is parking the bike for a couple days while some overpriced mail order vendor rushes one out y UPS or whatever...  If it happened on a trip, well that's another headache altogether...

I live in MN but have been pulled over all over the states.  Never once have they asked for registration and only rarely for insurance information.  My registration is at home with the rest of the bike papers in my file cabinet.  Now that I have gray hair and am north of 60 I've gotten warnings the last few times I've been pulled over.  I guess age has it's privileges.   :chugbeer:

I would never leave my helmet or jacket on a bike, unlocked.  That is one reason we have panniers.  Adding a helmet lock under the rack is great for an additional option without eating into the pannier storage (although it won't necessarily be a DRY option)... quick and easy.

Bike cable lock for the win.
Locks up to two jackets and two helmets.
Enough of a deterrent to work while you're eating dinner.

Well, I can lock up two helmets or two jackets or one of each with the dual helmet lock thing.... of course, locking the jacket with it is a bit tricky... sometimes it is just the zipper :)   I have only resorted to that once, when I just had zero space left in the panniers and had to go somewhere without the helmet or jacket.

The bike cable lock is a good alternative, though... perhaps not as secure or convenient for helmets, but much better for jackets.  (Plus it is cheaper and higher capacity).

I keep my registration under my seat in a zip lock bag in my tool kit on my 2011. I also have a picture of it on my phone since I heard that a number of states are now accepting photo's. I also put a picture of my drivers license on my phone in case I ever forget my wallet. I got a ticket recently and the cop asked for my registration and I told him it was under my seat so it would take a minute to get it and he said don't worry about it and that he could pull it up on his computer, which he did. My bike is registered in Utah and he was an Arizona cop so it must be a national database.

It is.  The idea of a "registration" paper is totally silly.  The first thing they do is run the plates and that has all the info they need.  Insurance card is complete ludicracy - it means absolutely nothing having it.  Doesn't prove you have insurance because it doesn't mean the policy is even valid.  It serves only one purpose, really, it has your past/current/future policy number on it (oh, and a phone number to call if something happens).

Here is the link to 36 states that accept pictures of drivers license, insurance, and registration. Good backup to have on your phone.

Indiana makes a registration that is the size of a credit card for bikes but before they did I kept mine under the tools in the plastic box as well. The Ohio State Patrol officer got to wait while I removed the loaded touring pack and gear from the seat to get at it..... ***** got a polite  earfull and a challenge from my Indiana State Police friends  while I took my time unstrapping the bag and getting the seat off.

Fyi
Its not a law in Ohio, to have the registration with you, just saying... its suggested only, and if the retard can't get it figured out you own the bike with the combo of running your plate number, while holding your drivers license in hand, he needs some edjumacation...

I bet he never even asked you for proof of insurance did he?
That supposedly IS a requirement, but you can press them on that one also, because you have 48 hoursto produce it to any agency in the state if you so desire to.  Last time I got a bogus stop for no reason, the card I had for current insurance was sitting on the kitchen counter at home, I handed the LEO the last card I had, which showed my insurance was good up to 2 weeks prior, he gave me b/s about it, and I handed him the prior 12 cards showing the history of 6 years... and said do you really think I wouldn't have insurance....
I told him to call the number on the card, and ask for the Gecko, and they will tell you I'm insured....
Took all of 2 minutes to get that done, and have a nice day sir...
