Title: Super Bike vs F1 Auto
Post by: Walker18 on April 05, 2016, 01:38:11 PM
Guy Martin and his Tyco BMW Superbike take on David Coulthard and a Red Bull RB8 Formula 1 car in a series of head-to-head challenges including a drag race, a brake test, a slalom and a circuit race.

Interesting, but I want a rematch with a bike that was designed using the same amount of people/resources/years/money as the F1 car :)   It is easy to have a bike that is significantly faster in the straight (as you saw in the video)... but super-extreme cornering on a 2 wheel vehicle... that has some particularly interesting technical challenges.

Apples to oranges. It should have been a Moto Gp bike.

...and Marc Marquez.

The side by side passing in the corners was a slap of reality, and in doing so, he was swinging wide.
The way the F1 danced through the rest of the course was poetic. I doubt Guy Martian could've had better
times than he did, and he did very well. All in all, the real thing was better than watching animated overlays.

...and Marc Marquez.

MM on his motoGP Honda I believe would out run Guy Martin on the BMW but not nearly enough to make it even close to the F1 car. At COTA, MM has the lap record for a motorcycle and still about 22 seconds slower than F1.

Cost of Moto Gp bike, $2M. Cost of Red Bull F1 car, $171M. I'm no math major but.....

True but I doubt even a billion dollars is going to overcome 2 tiny contact patches vs 4 very large contact patches. That said, I don't even go to F1 at COTA any more. Totally boring compared to moto GP ;)

Absolutely. My point was, at 80 times the cost, 20 seconds is very expensive.

True dat! And now with the hybrid cars the exhaust is muffled and it doesn't even sound like an F1 race anymore. Sure they go faster but the spectacle and soul of F1 racing is gone.

Not a problem since it's sponsors and consumers footing the bill

Cubic inches used to win races, now cubic money does.

Fast *should* be quiet.  People need to get over this whole noise = fast crud.

Just wait until fully electric... OMG fast and virtually no sound at all.  All we need are vastly more powerful batteries.  But even with limited batteries- Tesla vehicles haul ass!

Electric is good but there is NOTHING like the sound of a screaming internal combustion engine.

Yeah, with the fedgov shoveling taxpayer money at Musk. If it's such a wonderful idea let it stand on it's own.

Yeah, with the fedgov shoveling taxpayer money at Musk.

The Fed gives a credit for all electric vehicles, not just Tesla.

The Libertarian in me agrees...but the realist in me believes that market needs some support to get going.  I think a better route would be to tax gas higher and use THAT money only for things relating to improving transportation, and if that includes a subsidy for quiet/safe/efficient/green/anti-middle-east vehicles, that ain't so bad.

I can hardly wait for my ObamaCar.

I can hardly wait for my ObamaCar.

An ObamaCar.... Hmmm...

It would take five times as long to develop as any other car.
The first 1,000 of them wouldn't work at all and would have to be replaced under warranty.
The development cost would be 100 times that of any other car ever made.
It would be a car that starts off as one type of vehicle and changes to another over a few years of running it.
It would be cheap to buy because it costs little but yet tremendously expensive because everyone else pays for it.
It would monitor everything you do and report it back to every Federal agency.
You couldn't own it, but just rent it.
Its country of origin would be in dispute.
Its paint color would be grey (neither dark or light colors offered).
It would include insurance, but not necessarily what you want.
It would run on gas that changed price depending on what you could supposedly "afford".
Upkeep and mechanical maintenance would be outsourced to some other country.
The car would have an autonomous mode that would ignore any traffic rules it thinks doesn't apply.
Anyone would be allowed to drive it, even if they have no license.
It wouldn't have any keys or locks, and if you try to install them, it calls maintenance to come remove them.
It would qualify for "cash for clunkers" in just a few years and sell back for more than it cost to make.
There would be a great car support website that solicits improvement suggestions and pretty much ignores them all.

You mean something like that?  (Oh and a BushAcar would be just as miserable, and in many of the same ways but also in different ways)

:rotflmao:  ....it will also be driverless and have solar rechargeable batteries that tend to catch fire before its' 50 mile range run out.

And it would have big ears like the Truly Nolan cars.

If you like your car, you can keep your car.

You would find out what your car looked like after you bought it.

Like I said, they go faster. But speed isn't everything. I still rather see a race between WWII aircraft then jets.

These cars have something the electrics will never have:

Why not just put baseball cards in the spokes?
Or a Mr. T recorded voice screaming, 'Get Outta the Way, Fool'~
Possibly the infamous tunes played on ice cream trucks
Could use the sounds of 12 sled dogs
Maybe a promo vehicle for a local craft beer, that belches and farts
Ok, I'm done.

My buddy is visiting for the Austin MotoGP this week and is a photo journalist. He was telling me about Formula E race and since the cars didn't make any noise they played lame video game like music to try to make the race more exciting. Said it would have been much better without the fake music/noise.
