Title: GoPro
Post by: timsatx on January 07, 2016, 07:22:25 AM
Anybody here use GoPro's on their bikes? I just got one for Christmas and am working my way up to use it. I was planning on riding my bike in this morning and mounting it somehow this afternoon, that is until I woke up and it was foggy out there. I looked at mounting it to my helmet but it has way too many angles on it to mount it, plus it is a modular helmet so that makes it that much more difficult.

I bought one for this purpose a while back, but have yet to use it...

I've seen those guys, but always thought the extra drag on the helmet was something I didn't want...

RAM mounts can be customised to go just about anywhere...  Not sure I'd trust the adhesive mounts that come with it.

My daughter also bought me an accessory kit and it came with a chest mount that I was going to do. Maybe tomorrow. I might have to leave a little early from work though as the route I would go gets blocked pretty early with the road construction going on.

Had a buddy that put 2-3 different mounts on his bike and could move the GoPro around. The ones out of the direct airstream may have been held on with double back tape.

He had one on the back that pointed to the rear and could record the ride of people behind him. It did a good job as a training aid for those that followed him.

He didn't care for the helmet mount either.

Ram mounts are the go.  I've tried all sorts of positions and have a couple I use depending on what sort of shot I'm after.  The GoPro sticky mounts are pretty good but as long as you can position them so the camera can see something - I have one on the underside of my topbox mount and hang the camera upside down, it gets good video and pics from there.

I did a short ride yesterday right after work. Not really a good time with people getting off work and school letting out. I recorded it with my GoPro, edited it, and then posted it to my YouTube channel. It's the first time I did anything like that.

I prefer the Ram Mounts  for mounting the GoPros. Pretty solid on the handlebars.

Which one do you use and where do you mount it?

I just use the suction cup mount, stick it on the front. I do use a tether but have never needed it.

I have two of these mounted low where the bars connect at the base. Work very well for my EzPass and Water Bottle holder.

This connects the cam to the Ram mounting system.

I have two of these. One on each reservoir. Work really well. This is where I'll normally mount my GoPro for long trips.

I bought a Sony AS20 action cam ($119 new but open box at BestBuy). I first did a simple mount on top of the clutch reservoir but too much wind shield in the view. I bought a Ram ball mount with a U-bolt ball mount to put anywhere on my Canyon Cages. Interesting view lower to the ground and the front tire. I'm going to try all different locations including look rearward. The ram mount gives you unlimited options.

I don't mind a view thru a windshield, just make sure it is clean. I think it is time I go back over mine to make it more clear again.

There are a couple of other cams I am looking at. The Mobius is one of them. The biggest problem with the Mobius is the sensor doesn't handle the sun very well. When there is bright light coming into the lens it tends to darken or blackout the surrounding scene. Other than that it takes great video, and the price is great too.

I just got a GoPro recently also. I used the helmet mount for my first videos. They seemed to turn out pretty good, but the video doesn't give the viewer the sensation of changes in elevation or tightness of turns. Over all though, I'm very happy with it.

Yeah, I agree with that. Some of those turns I took were sharper than they looked. I have to go out to take a different path next time. There are some better roads, plus I don't want to do it right after work when everyone is getting off work and when there are a lot of school buses. That's what happened on this ride.

Here's my ride on Virginia US 211 from Luray toward Sperryville. You can tell how the camera straightens everything out. You can see the sharpness of the curve up ahead, but lose the definition once you're into it. You have to watch the angle of the mirrors to see how sharp the turn actually is.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VJN1KHF_fI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VJN1KHF_fI) I would turn your sound off because all you'll hear is wind noise.

GoPro's sales are down and the stock has been tanking, bet there are good deals on them about now (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

I mounted my GoPro under the left hand mirror using the self adhesive mounts supplied. I do use a lanyard secured around the mirror mount just in case the self adhesive mount fails. The beauty of mounting it this way is that the mount when not in use is hardly noticeable.
A short sample video with the Gopro mounted like that below:
