Title: Bike catches fire at the pump, rider saved but not the bike
Post by: LandRocket on October 09, 2015, 07:13:33 PM
Thought this was an interesting article for discussion. How would this happen?

"it overflowed and suddenly burst into flames" - not a good situation.

Maybe he was afraid that the bike wouldn't start again if he turned it off.
Can't really think of another reason for him to keep it running while filling up.
And what caught his attention so as to overfill the tank?  A pretty girl?  Who knows?

Maybe the pump failed to shut off as most of them do around here.

Bet he won't do that again.

That sucks.  I'm not afraid of much, but fire is at the top of my list.  Kudos for the guys who ran into it to help, not sure I'd have the balls to do that.  There is a reason they have those signs that say "Shut off the engine".

One more reason to NOT sit on your bike while refueling.  We have a thread about that.

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahhkbYxxVMY#)

The story on CNN has the witnesses saying that the guy not only left his bike running while fueling but that he had his music cranked so loud that he couldn't hear anyone yelling a warning to him that the fuel was overflowing or that the fire had started.  :o

Spiders flicking their BICs, not good!

I looked at the videos a few times and I could be wrong BUT I don't think he was sitting on it.
The engine was running and he overfilled it.  Then fell on the ground and other rushed in.

Saw it once on the local news after my wife told me about it. Looked like he was off the bike and holding the nozzle at arms length with the engine running. No way he could see it approaching full from arms' length. He was lucky.

No, I realize he wasn't sitting on it, just saying that if you need another reason not to, this would be it.

He wasn't really sitting "on" it. He was leaning on it while it was on the side stand. Yeah I fill up while on the bike. As careful as I can and always turn the bike off. It's a thing I have to have a level tank when filling it. On the stand it's not level. MY OCD WON"T ALLOW IT!!!  :loco:
