Title: Laid 'er down
Post by: PlaynInPeoria on June 25, 2015, 11:20:22 AM
In my freakin garage.  Backing it in (not like Marc Marquez, literally, just rolling it in).  Right foot slipped because it was wet, weight went to my right arm, which has carpal tunnel/tennis elbow right now and over she went.  I wasn't happy at all, not a little bit. I did use proper technique to pick up after I let the adrenaline wear off a bit.

No serious damage, just scratches in various places, two different types of surfaces that I need to touch up and that's what I'm hear to ask.   2012 Arabian Red bike.  The bags and a couple other painted surfaces are scratched.  Also the gray part down low, the unpainted surface has some slight cosmetic damage.

I am looking to benefit from the hive mind here and learn from those who have already learned the right way to do this (sometimes by doing it the wrong way, which is what I am trying to avoid).  I'm not looking for Mona Lisa perfection, I just want it to be not as noticeable as it is now.  Others who have done touch ups, what advice can you offer?  I will post pics when I get home.  I probably need to wash it first, I rode in a hell of a rain storm last night coming home.

THANK YOU!

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt..left the scuffs on.  I broke the bike's fall with my body.  That prevented quite a bit of damage.   I do hate when that happens, though.

Holy crap, breaking the fall with your body sounds bad.  The whole time it was going down, I was thinking, "Do NOT break the fall with your body!".

How'd that work out for you?

I've not heard any anyone breaking one.

I usually put it on the centerstand, so I just used the kick stand yesterday and noticed
how much it flexes. You really have to make sure you move it back as far as it goes
since there seems to be no friction or locking point.

Just order yourself a set of Canyon cages. Mine went down something like yours. The only damage was a small scrape in the Canyon Cage. Left it as a war wound.

I have the same bike, same color and it happens to be the toughest color to "touch-up"! I tried to touch-up a spot on my tank and it looks TERRIBLE! I am going to have it re-shot eventually by the guys that do the painting for our local Kawi dealership. They said they would do it for $250 so I will have it done soon. The other option is to mask the area, sand it all down and shoot it with Rustoleum Bed Liner spray. I did it to the tops of my bags and they look really good! The flat black does well with the red we have.

If you pick it up before the adrenaline wears off it doesn't matter how you do it.  But sometimes you find yourself standing on the non-kickstand side, then it might lay down again.   :(

I had a friend use a buffing wheel with some plastic polish to wipe out the scratches.  Most of the scratch is probably in the clear coat and when polished will result in the red showing again.  Just take it easy so you don't go through all the paint.

Sounds like an FBW to me!  (free bike wash)   :chugbeer:

+1 This

OP:  At you didn't drop yours while you were completely stopped in traffic and just sitting there waiting waiting...... like I did.

Took me a bit to extricate myself as it pinned me close to the wall.  I wasn't hurt from the fall as it came down slow...(forgot to put kickstand down in garage  ).  Back got tweaked in putting it back upright.

A full set, fore and aft of MCI crash bars. Some call them "Handicap Bars".. I simply say, they're well worth the money spent. Sorry you had a spill and glad your okay. About $750. 00 plus for repair and repaint. About $600.00 for the crashbars. If you install them, yourself.

Addendum:  I've had a full set on both of the Connies from day one. Some steel wool and touch up paint for the scrapes of life, too.

I installed Canyon Cages right after I bought my bike, a bit over 3 years ago. I can proudly say it's the only bike I have ever had that I have not dropped at least once!

 Must be KiPass.

My poor KLR seems to take a dirt nap almost every time it gets out in the woods.

I feel for ya man! The one time that my bike has been down was in my garage too. I moved it so that my grandsons could get their bicycles out of the garage. I set her back on the side stand and turned around. I heard a VERY nasty crunching sound and I did not want to turn around to see what it was. It seems that I bumped the side stand when I was moving the bike.   :banghead:

The surest way to never drop your bike is to install drop protection. After my bike went over in the garage I installed Canyon Cages and she hasn't been down sense then.

I'll bet Jims' bike hasn't been down in the garage since he installed his shelf protection.

For those that suggested crash bars as a solution for my problem, thanks. I'll begin the process of rollimg back the clock immediately.

I left the broken signal light duct taped on that bike for two years as a reminder of how easy it is to flip them.
