Title: Engine makes sweet music
Post by: Gigantor on May 26, 2015, 05:21:33 AM
On hard acceleration, the engine sounds like a F1 engine. Does this
beautiful music come from the engine or stock muffler?

I'm wondering if replacing the stock muffler would change the tune.

Both, and the intake.  The intake supplies more sound that I would have expected.  And if you mess with the secondaries (flashing the ECU or pulling the flies) the intake gets considerably louder.

Anything you change will likely change what it sounds like.  Good or bad change- that is in the ear of the beholder.

A large inline 4 does sound nice compared to smaller 4's or any kind of 2's.

It's the engine 8). At full tilt, the engine makes A LOT more noise than a stock exhaust. In fact, sitting on the bike, you don't hear the stock exhaust at all. But yes, it's beautiful music indeed ;D. That's why I don't like an exhaust louder than the engine. The same at the most. And that's precisely what the TBR with the larger dB killer does.

My Dirty Grrrl, a 2009, makes a pleasing whislting noise just before the exhaust begins to wail!   8)

Some of it, I believe, is intake noise.
Pulling hard from a tall gear with large throttle openings gives me a sound remeniscent of a four barrel carb on a V8.   :D

I've toyed with the idea of removing the resonators from the intake tract just for WTH.   :P

Gigantor,

Before your next ride, when you start 'er up, take a trip to the front of your machine.   :)

Pretend you're making sure all the lights are working.   ;)

Put an ear near one of the air intakes on the nose.
You really don't have to get that close.   ;)

That's the sound of a hungry machine and it wants you to twist it's tail!   ;D

I love the intake sound on the C14.  I almost wish I didn't wear earplugs to retain my perfect hearing so I could enjoy it more.

What resonators are you speaking of?

What resonators are you speaking of?

The little "boxes" that attach to the air intake tubes.

Little mufflers?

Basically. They are generally used to "tune" the sound. Some intakes sound like a kazoo without them.

Exactly!

Though I couldn't imagine the 14 sounding like a kazoo!   :D
