For those members who have to think about using a magnetic oil drain plug, or ask their wives or girlfriends if they can spend $8.95 to buy one..........look at this pic!
Do you feel lucky punk......well do ya?

Someone should learn how to use the clutch. ;)

Well, I've checked mine and thank goodness I don't see any filings on it like in your picture. In fact, I didn't see anything on it but oil, but I didn't have my glasses on at the time.

Here's a pic of my mag plug after the second oil change. The first oil change was done at 580 miles and I installed the mag plug at that time. The second change was done at ~ 3600 miles.
That's pretty much a metallic mush stuck to the mag.

That's what you get for washing your bike....

You guys should try a "FilterMag",goes on the outside of your oil filter, and traps any metal on the inside of your filter, away from the oil flow. When you change filters the gunk is thrown away with the filter. You can find these on e-bay for a discounted price. The size that fits our bikes is :....SS250. Go to this site for info. ;D 8)

I find it interesting. Have you personally used it? In your bike? with what results?
If FredH is around... what are your thoughts?

FredH is not around...

"away from the oil flow"? doesn't the oil flow through the filter?

...What I should have said is, the FilterMag holds the any metal attracted by the magnet on the wall of the filter, keeping it out of the direct flow of the oil going through the filter media. I have yet to cut open an old filter to see just how much crude is caught on the filter walls, but it has to be a lot more than would be caught on the small tip of a magnetic plug. The magnet is very strong, as a matter of fact, it is difficult to pull off the filter when replacing with a new one. The pic on their site shows the surface area of metal trapped by the FilterMag. I like the fact that there's no magnet inside of my engine that could break loose and cause big problems, very simple and effective. I use one on my Chevy pickup, my C-14, and my Mean Streak. I will open the filter on my next oil change and will post pics. Now, least any of you think I have any interest in the product other than sharing what I think is a great product with my fellow riders, think not! I just think it is a much better solution than a small magnet on the end of a drain plug which is inside your engine. As I said earlier, these can be purchased on E-bay or Amazon at a much lower price than quoted on the dealers site. 8)

Another option is to stick an old computer harddrive magnet to the outside of your filter...

Comet....I did just that for a while, while it does work, it doesn't have near the magnetic surface area of the FilterMag....Just sayin... ;D 8)

On a new bike I change oil, filter and install a magnetic plug as soon as I drive it home from the dealer. I then change at oil and filter at 300 and 500 miles.
You would be amazed a the metal shavings and particles you recover!! Worst I had was on a new KLR 650........thought the metal particles would never stop

I never saw the point of magnetic plugs.
They catch only the steel pieces and most of those would be picked up by the filter anyways.
Any bigger pieces will get swept away by oil flow anyways.
One of the reasons that wet sump motors last longer is that crud can settle to the bottom of the sump, out of harms way, and stay there.
When I first removed the sump from Sanji's motor there was about 3mm of metallic sludge at the bottom and this was after running Wynns Engine Flush in the oil for the last 50 miles.
I cleaned it out with solvents and some 10,000 miles later when I did gearbox rebuild #2 the sump was still clean but the 3rd time it had about a 1mm film.
Otto's motor has 160,000 miles and has never had anything other than Wynns every 4th or 5th oil change since I bought him @ 82,000 miles.
I change oil and filter every 6,000 miles and use unbranded semi-synth 10W40.

I put 1 inch round cobalt magnets on the oil filter, the bottom of the magnetic oil drain plug, and the bottom of the rear end magnetic oil drain plug....the cobalt magnets are super powerful and you have to handle them very carefully or they snap together with such ferocity...it often pinches the skin and causes bleeding....
I guarantee you there is nothing inside my oil pans, or rear end housing of a metallic nature floating around!
Just to give me that warm fuzzy feeling........

Opinions are like toilet paper.....some use it to wipe with.....some don't wipe at all....the choice is yours....!

The real question is why are you changing oil on a Honda Rebel? I hope that is your loaner bike when you C14 is in Service at the dealership.... ;D
-
This pic was merely to demonstrate how a magnetic plug can work for you...nothing more does not matter if it is on a Honda Rebel or a lawnmower....magnets work the same way to remove small metal particles...

I use the magnetic bolt in my driveshaft and change fluid everytime with engine oil-the driveshaft mag plus always some metalic particles on it-the engine oil does not.

I was wondering how she got the magnet thingy to stick to a plastic bottle.

$42.75 is kind of high for a magnet!!! O.K. now how many if any, have had a failure due to metal in the oil?
I have run way over 100,000 miles on a Gold Wing and many of my friends have run close to and over 200,000 miles on them with out a filter mag or a magnetic drain plug and never a problem. Do your first oil change early and then change the oil and filter on a regular interval and you will be fine.

I just liked watching her shake the bottle. ;D
