Title: headset bearings
Post by: stlheadake on December 05, 2014, 10:20:31 AM
How difficult is it to adjust the headset bearings?  I know there is a special tool involved, but is it a job for a moderate mechanic?  I am almost certain mine are loose, and I need to fix that.  I asked the local shop to check them the last time I had it in, but it was 'overlooked'.  Which led me to wonder if it is a big job?

Not hard, just needs care, like most things.  If you get one of these sockets it'll be a big help.  The nuts and lock tab are unusual in that the tab is not keyed to the stem, allowing both nuts to turn (tighten) more when locking them up.  Use a maker pen on the lower nut to ensure it does not turn further as you tighten the upper one, after you've got it adjusted correctly.
