Title: Soot in the exhaust!
Post by: Mister Tee on June 14, 2011, 10:10:52 AM
Is what I'd expect to see in the tailpipe of a '65 Impala.  But not in the tailpipe of a 2010 EFI motorcycle with less than 10,000 miles on it.  This thing must be running very rich.  Is that normal?

Change to a nonfossil based fuel, containing no carbon, your tail pipes will be nice and clean :)

It was for my '08 before the AreaP full, PCV, and Auto Tune.  No more soot for me ;)

So, are you running 100% pure ethanol fuel?

If you look at a PCV map, they take away fuel almost everywhere. I think these bikes run rich to keep the cats happy.

Mine is like that too.  I asked the same question on the old forum.   Now I just ride it!

well of course, the sky gets bluer and athe grass gets greener and the bike runs faster and cleaner and birds sing....after an area p installation.  no secret about that.

I have soot on my '08.  I don't think its anything bad after all you are burning fuel, its just the design of the exhaust shows it a bit more.   Go stick your finger in your tailpipe on your car and it will come out a bit sooty, its just usually on a car you have a tip that sticks out and that's it and on the Connie, that tip sits insides of the outer cap which gives the soot a place to build up visibly and having it silver just makes it show more.

So why do you still have that howitzer on your ride? ;)

Well see that's the thing though - my car DOESN'T have a sooty tailpipe.  None of them do except for the diesel pickup.  On the old board there was a thread about ECU remapping with a link to Dynatronics but I can't find the link.  I might pursue that.

you asked that before, on this bike I want max distance between gas stops, I'm keeping it absolutely bone stock (unlike any other bike I've ever owned)

and yea that bazooka is nutz!

My fuel mileage went UP after AreaP Full System and PC-V.  You don't have to downshift, the power is just THERE!  Also the PC-V map cuts out fuel in almost every section.  I gained 3-5 mpg after the switch and I think I ride it harder, just to hear that beautiful AreaP Carbon Can sing!

BTW, the soot went WAY down after the full system.

Your mpg has to go up after switching out the stock can doesn't it? That thing must weigh at least 250lbs!    ;)

Just currious what you all set your target A/F ratio on the PVC autotune combo?  I'd like to get the best MPG without any risk of running too lean.

Now the benefit of a pc5 with auto-tune versus an ECU re-flash becomes more evident.

I feel pretty comfy with an AFR of around 13.8. If it's mileage you're chasing, some folks would go leaner than that... 14.2 seems about as lean as I would trust. Best practice would be to set cruising gear/throttle/speed area to a lean condition and leave all other cells at a more normal 13.4. Play with it and see what works for you.
