Title: Cam Chain Noise
Post by: Rhino on April 24, 2014, 06:30:25 AM
Old topic I know. But my 2010 with 44,000 miles on it started making the cam chain noise even when warm. I'd be sitting a light and get the noise. I could increase rpm slightly and get it to go away. Over a period of a week it started getting worse. I've been commuting on it and working long hours and I haven't given the bike any TLC in the last few months. I checked the oil and nothing in the sight gauge :yikes: I added oil and it was 2.5 quarts low! I knew my valve cover was leaking a bit but obviously leaking more than I thought. After topping off the oil, the noise went away completely (except the normal 2 seconds after cold startup).

So I was wondering if I was actually loosing oil pressure. No indication on the panel but why else would the CCT start backing off in normal riding? Still runs fine but wondering if I damaged the engine at all.

Don't know- the oil pressure lights are usually set to trigger at a pretty low rate, meaning the oil pressure could be quite low before the oil pressure light actually goes on.

2 1/2 quarts low should have left puddles all over the place if it was leaking out of the engine. ??

Been 7500 since last oil change. So yes, small puddles must have been left all over Colorado and Texas but I never noticed. None under the bike in my clean garage when I left 2 months, 4000 miles ago.

1 qt every 3000 miles. Sure hope its not burning that much.
