Title: Rear Wheel Disassembly for Powder Coat Question
Post by: xsv on April 20, 2014, 08:06:02 PM
I am getting ready to powder coat my 09 silver wheels to black.  On the rear wheel I removed bearings, rotors, valve stem and TPMS.

I just want to confirm there is nothing else I can break down.  I am looking at the rear hub and trying to understand what I am seeing within the hub?

Can't seem to find anything in the service manual or with a search.

OK...I found the gigantic snap ring and removed it, but am really unsure about what I am even looking at let alone what I am removing.  EDIT...ok hub coupling and hub shock damper....

OK...disregard...found it in the manual. Work the hub coupling out and remove rubber shock damper....boy that might have been a mess when they baked it during the powdercoating!! :)

Yes, you need to remove all of that and the bearings too.

Yep...that is what it looks like now!

Off topic...you had them powder coat inside of the hub where the damper goes?

That pic of my gold wheels were actually plated, not powder coated...

But it was the only pic I could find in my library that showed that side of the rear wheel...

I've done a couple other sets of wheels too though and yes I had that section powder coated as well.

Thanks.....I've seen your variety of colors.  That is what got me interested in changing the color of mine.  That all black look is what I am going for!

Thanks for the input.

Jay, did you ever get a chance to see what the bike looks like with the gold rims on with the black plastics?  With the Ohlins and maybe the emblems painted gold, I think that might look pretty good?

Nope, once I moved forward with the green highlights on the black bodywork set I like the green wheels with it...  :)
