Title: Are these 2 wires supposed to be connected?
Post by: FreeC14 on March 23, 2014, 10:26:02 AM
This is in regard to a 2012 C14 ABS.

I was messing around in the area in the picture looking for rear blinker and tail brake light wires and noticed the connector not connected.  Over the years on various bikes, I have seen similar scenarios with male/female connectors in close proximity and the wires were NOT supposed to be connected even though their close proximity might suggest they should be.  Looking at the wiring layout in the C14 Service Manual (the big phone book size manual) it looks like it might be an accessory connector.

There is not enough slack in the wires to photo their colors.  The female connector wire is solid black with grey dots about every inch.  The male connector wire is black with yellow stripe (ground?) and grey dots about every inch.  I don't see anything in the wire layout that mentions anything about grey dots.

Should these two wires be connected?

Thanks.

Only connect them together if you want to blow your accessory fuse. They are your rear accessory leads.

Really?
Did you look at the FSM to find that, or are you guessing?
Don't hook anything to those wires, they are used to invoke diagnostics.

If those wires were sticking up there without you removing the ecu box, and fishing them up, that's what they are.

To get to the actual accessory leads back there, they are buried underneath the box, it must be removed, and the acc leads fished up and around to get them in a usable spot. They are Black (solid color) and Black/Yel stripe (again, solid color...)
if anything has gray dots there it is part of the diagnostics...  I think....

I fished them out and pulled them up so i could take a picture.  I just was not sure if I accidentally disconnected them when i was fishing for blinker and rear brake light wires or if they were always disconnected.  Sounds like they should be disconnected if they are not being used.  They are most likely the accessory wires you mentioned that are under the ECU.  The wires in the picture are pulled up as far as i dare without messing something up.  I agree it would make sense the ECU would have to be removed to easily get to them.  They would be tough to work with zero slack as they are in the picture.

They are not diagnostics wires. The diagnostic plugs are in the foam block next to the ECU. One for the FI ECU, and the other for the ABS ECU.

The wires in the picture look like the accessory leads...they're just pulled out the back instead of the front.

The wiring diagram in the service manual actually shows 2 sets of accessory connecters, a set for the front and a set for the rear.  That doubles my chance of frying something.    ;D

I took off my rear turn signal lenses and added a few red LED's to each one and put the lenses back on. Now they are red with the turn signals off and still flash amber with them on. They are powered off the rear accessory plug. They work great for extra tail lights because it only has power with key on.

sounds like an easy useful mod.
Do you have an easy schematic to work off?

And maybe some pics...  with/without the brake...   Sounds like a useful mod.

these are the accessory leads, with the green tape on them....

the harness was pulled and positioned to make repairs on wires chewed up by a nesting mouse clan....
