'Spose it can't be worse, can it? :feedback:
-
It's supposed to be better...
-
The key word is "supposed". Although I must admit that I have no experience with 8 at all.
-
What do you currently have?
If you have a touch screen then by all means give it a try. I personally don't like windows 8 on a no-touch screen computer.
-
I do not have a touch screen and I am far from being a computer geek.

New Spouse can't be worse, can it? :feedback:
Most Widows have money from insurance so I reckon they are free!! But I am having a hard time seeing 2, much less 8.1 :o
-
I have Win Hate on a non touch screen laptop... I put a hack on it so it emulated Win Heaven. I will be installing Hate.1 just to check it out... can always reinstall the hack.

+1 I use start8 http://news.softpedia.com/news/Start8-1-30-Brings-Full-Windows-8-1-RTM-Support-391852.shtml (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Start8-1-30-Brings-Full-Windows-8-1-RTM-Support-391852.shtml)
Made my new machine with win 8 actually usable.
-
I use WinH8 on a touchscreen. Kind of a blonde OS, cute but stupid. For all you blondes, sorry about the blonde joke.........
Updating to the new .1 will require reinstalling any programs, so it will be a long time before I touch the updates. It usually whacks all your settings too.

+1 It can't be worse is right! :o
I avoid using 8 like the plague. Unfortunately I can't avoid it here at work completely and my wife has 8 on her touchscreen tablet.
She likes it and said that she tried to upgrade with the free 8.1 update but it didn't work. So guess who gets to look at it and see why?

My opinion is different! I do like win 8 - especially the internal tweaks they have put in place over other versions of windows. I understand it is a learning curve to get familiar with the new interface, but I am looking forward to installing windows 8 by end of Nov and go to town.
I realize it may seem to be challenge to get used to a completely new interface after we are so intuned/institutionalized to pretty much the same interface since win 3.1 or something. But I think there is lot of good benefit with windows 8 as long as you are up to re-learning an interface.

Glad somebody likes it. I like it fine now with the start8 mod. I'm sure my problem was mostly due to not wanting to go through the learning curve but I found it difficult to multi task. Also for non-touch screens, I don't get tiles. They are just ridiculously large icons IMO. Ok for touch screens I would imagine but for keyboard mouse machines, they just get in the way.
-
Relearning an interface if given a choice is one thing... especially when I paid for a device with it installed. I didn't want to learn a new interface at the time since I didn't have the time.
Enjoy it.

The biggest issue that I have with 8 is that it's SO non-intuitive. I've been using computers since the days of punch cards and I've been through all of the Windows iterations. With knowledge of the pervious version of Windows you could get through well enough with the new version. Not so for me with 8. I spend more time looking for how to do something than anything else. The learning curve shouldn't be so steep.

+1 I've been in DP/MIS/IT since 1979... seen it... done it... still doing it.

I think you've hit on the biggest problem with W8 - In our company there are two groups of people (of course - one group likes it, one doesn't) and we (in IT) have noticed that most of the people that do like it are mobile phone "Power-Users" and are already used to the touch- or tile- based operations. We haven't completely adopted 8 yet, over half of our userbase is still on 7, with a few diehard managers still on XP... Personally, I don't like updates too much - As you say, the job's difficult enough most days without the extra aggravation of learning a new interface, but to me a PC is mostly just a tool to sign onto a real computer (a mainframe ;D )
(The Android people seem to love it, while the Blackberry people don't share the love... The iPeople are evenly split)

And that right there is the crux of most of our problems....we're old and we don't like change. Windows 8 and beyond is for the young whipper snappers who eat up social networks for breakfast.
And BTW, I used to repair said key punch machines aeons ago...
-
Put 8.1 on my Surface RT and it is an improvement.
However I bought a new gaming rig recently. First thing I did was put Windows 7 on it.

I think that Classvino hit the nail on the head with this.
Snip...

I'm still using a dumb phone so I'm way behind the curve (and I don't care).
-
Does it plug into the wall, Conrad?
-
:rotflmao: As does mine...when it's charging.
-
I'd send you a picture of my phone but it doesn't have a camera.
-
Trying to figure out how you'd do that anyway.

Winner!

Maybe I should have asked if you still had to crank it.

Our phone in the 50's was a crank up. I can't remember how many people were on the party line.

There were 13 on our line. Our phone # was two longs and a short.

What Jim said.
Ok, maybe I don't have a totally dumb phone after all. I do text my family and it does take pics. I just refuse to pay extra for a data plan is all.

This thread is veering off track a bit, don't we think?
In that vein, however, one of the things I totally detest is texting. I think even when we upgrade to smarter phones (my present criteria in a phone is large keys so that I can see them to punch in a number) I'm going to turn that feature off. It's too bloody dangerous and so easy to do in a vehicle. It's worse than drunk driving as so many more people use it with abandon. I hates it, I does.
I'm not sure how a data plan works as I won't get email either. I don't have to keep in touch up to the second on what's going on. Don't care. No social network applications either. And very little web stuff. So I'm thinking the only data I may use is possibly sending pictures to someone and the downloading of apps which shouldn't be that great either. So the minimum plan for my wife and I (Verizon) should work for now.
-
Large keys eh Jim?

I text my sons and grandsons mostly.

Oooh, I like that!

I'm making the switch for my home pc from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. Will be working with it throughout the Holidays. My initial brush with it this morning is positive. On the downside, I'm going to replace my (circa 2005 or so) monitor with an HD capable one. I'll be using an HDMI cable for this one instead of VGA. I have high expectations. We'll see.
-
I hope you like it. I H8 it, and have it on two laptops. It's been a severe dud for MS.
-
I was initially excited when I found out that Hate.1 was bringing back the start button. When I found out the start button takes you to the stupid f**king Metro start screen, I got a lot less excited. Not installing 8.1 yet... just pissed.
Metro makes ZERO sense on a machine without a touchscreen. The 'zoom when mouse-over' OSX dock wouldn't make much sense in iOS, just as the 'multiple screens of apps' layout from iOS wouldn't make any sense when you have a high-resolution mouse and pointer. With Redmond trying to be like Cupertino, we get yet another Microsoft FAIL.
-
I initially had the same thoughts but the individual I bought it from installed an interface that makes it look like Windows 7. You can hit the window key to toggle it between that and 8. I started using 8 and it does take a bit of getting used to but it's going to take me a bit to figure it
all some of it out. I found some things that the guy I bought it from (a client of mine) didn't know but that's because he was used to 8 and not 8.1. He's been using it for some time. If he likes it for the most part then I know I will eventually.
I'll ask him what application changes it and let you know.

every time I use a winders machine I come to appreciate MAC just a bit more (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

I'm trying to keep an open mind about 8.1 and see if I can understand their logic in the layout rather than just being different. You have basically two desktops one regular and the metro which expands sideways like a phone. The real loss is the start button for navigation for finding things. The other deal is that you need the keyboard to get to other screens where I used to get along mostly with the mouse. Does anyone know of any nav tricks for 8.1 that helps getting around? Personally I feel this is the beginning of the future just buggy like all windows startups that are released before perfected. Also drag and drop doesn't work on all applications...go figure. Just my 2 cents worth. JP
