Title: Bike mount/dismount with a Smuggler
Post by: clogan on October 13, 2013, 01:18:17 PM
I'm still lusting after a Smuggler, and got to thinking: how much does a Smuggler affect you when you get on/off the bike? I'm six feet, with 32" inseam, and already have to be VERY careful when getting on/off bike, lest I scratch panniers. I would imagine  a Smuggler would make it even worse.

On my KLR, I have to put my left foot on the peg before mounting the bike, so that I can clear my panniers and top case. Is the same technique required for a C-14 with a Smuggler?

That's how I always mount my ZG with smuggler and without, no issues.  :)

ZG posted a photo.  It is the brand name of a single company's storage box that replaces the passenger seat.  Sargent calls theirs a "pod".

It doesn't matter if there is or is not a storage box or is or is not a bag mounted....  If you mount the bike FACING THE BIKE, putting your foot forward and over then twist to look forward, you will never hit or scuff or scratch anything.

I doubt either of you have shorter legs than I, and I don't stand on a peg.  I just mount it while facing it.

like I do on all my bikes,  put left hand on left grip and step through with right leg.  I'm not very flexible and it works for me.  I don't like to swing a leg over, too risky.  I get off the same way.

Yup, the first few weeks on my C14 I scratched the right side case a lot. I started mounting the bike like a horse with my left foot on the left peg. Solved the problem. I just keep my weight over the top of the bike when mounting and dismounting and there is zero change of pulling the bike over.

I mount mine from the back, just like a horse.  A little running start helps.

Some of the questions on here.  ::)

I figured YOU would do it the hard way ::)
I can flat foot the bike with flat shoes,  but I do it the ZG way , keep it simple , and EASY
wait , when your 59 and quit yoga,  you'll be standing on the peg also :chugbeer:

I have a smuggler and a 32" inseam. I stand on the ground and swing my leg over just like a sportbike. It's good practise for my TKD roundhouse kicks.

:)  At this rate, when I am 59, I will be so broken, I doubt I could mount the bike at all.

Please don't subvert the newbies, Jay.  Let them get a few posts under their belts before you coerce them to the dark green side.

Man I want one but just can't get past the price of admission. What I really want is a smuggler with the Corbin Slim door conversion side cases but still keep a set of stock side cases for long trips. But I also want a BMW G 650 GS Sertao. So many toys, so little cash.

If he rides with an open face helmet smoking a pipe and wearing a bathrobe I'd say yes.

Well, if he does, I hope he is using a wind cap!  (Which, of course, will not be enough on a bike)

To heck with a wind cap, what about a jockstrap?

Isn't there evidence on the site of ZG riding while wearing flip-flops? Or, was that someone else?

Never mind about the Smuggler question.

After making 7 phone calls spread over 2 days trying to reach an actual human so I could place my order, I gave up. I tried Florida. I tried California. Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring ring ring ring...then dial tone. When I finally did get a human receptionist, I was re-routed to sales, where I was greeted with a message assuring me that, while my call was very important to them, all their sales associates were helping other callers. So I held...and held...and held...then finally hung up. Called back and left a message  requesting a sales associate to call me so I could spend $1,400 with them. No luck. No call back. Called again the next day. Same result: nothing. I would have ordered on their web site, except that there is no option to select paint color. So I tried the phone. Wasted my time.

I would think it would be easier. It baffles me how Corbin stays in business. Or maybe they are not really in business. That's at least one explanation as to why they are do difficult to reach.

So I just decided I didn't really need a dang Smuggler after all. To heck with 'em!!

Why are you trying to order direct from Corbin?  ???

Everything I've ever bought from Corbin I just have my local shop order it up for me, that way I get my discount and I don't have to pay for it until it arrives, always works great for me.  :)

That was the other G, MG, who filmed himself while riding with flip flops.    :o

I just ordered mine directly from Corbin last Monday.  Even called them on Tuesday for some modifications to my order.  My wait time both times was about 3-5 minutes.  I called the 1-800 number.  Maybe try again?

I guess what I was remembering wasn't really "riding" in flip flops. More like moving the bike and ended up with at tip over due to wearing them.
