Title: TRE=Timing Retarder Eliminators recommended?
Post by: Irish-14 on June 07, 2011, 05:04:50 AM
Hey guys, my bike's going to be back in the shop for a  few days and my dealer has been trying to get me to install a TRE, Timing Retarder Eliminator, on my bike. They said it wouldn't affect the warranty, 2011 w/2,000 miles, and that it would make my bike more powerful in lower gears and a bit smoother, all for $150 installed. Has anyone done this to their C-14? What are your impressions? Is it worth it? Does it make the throttle too "jerky" for two-up in first gear? Did it change your overall MPG? The guy on the link states that it gives you 75%-80% of the performance of taking the flies out and having a PC put in, sounds too good to be true. Let me know my friends, Go Irish!

I would also like to know if anyone has done this with good results. Was the change noticable at all? What brand would you recommend? Does it eliminate the gear change display? Inquiring minds want to know.

I wish they had a smaller gear display, or could use the factory display. that huge one looks like ****.

I sent them an email asking if they were going to make the X-Tre version for the C16 and this was the reply.
Hello Eric,

Thank you for your email.

XTRE will not be available for the ZX14/C14 because it has a proprietary CAN
bus (unlike other models).
The only option is to install the GIpro/ATRE. With the unit installed and
setup, the stock display will show "6" in all gears.

Here is a dyno chart for the ZX14 in 3rd gear.

Kind Regards,
/Norbert

I'd save you money and go with the ECU Flash option, that's what I'm going to do. There's one option today that opens the flys 200 rpm sooner but I believe they can tweak it more if you like. And another on its way that's nearing completion.

Search the forum for details.

I have a 2010 and put a GiPro w/tre on it a few months after purchasing the bike last March. The bike used to start making power in the 6000 RPM range, with the tre activated it starts making power between 3000 and 4000 RPMs. Very noticable and very welcome improvement.

I've had a TRE on my 09 for awhile (until a couple days ago when I pulled the flies). It does make a noticeable difference in felt torque from about 3k to 6k. I thought it was worth it, if you do not want to pull the flies and get some type of fuel management system. I personally liked the large gear display and kinda miss it now that it's gone.

Pretty easy to install too.

That said, it in no way compares to fly removal for low end power.

OK, it's been about a week now since having the TRE installed on my bike by the dealer for a cost of $150. I really notice the power surge come on earlier than before, the front tire actually gets really light as you're rolling on now. No difference after 6-7k rpm and I was disapointed to lose my gear indicator, so I guess it's a toss up. More power, but have to guess which gear you're in. Think I'll keep it  for 6 months or so and make a decision after that. Go Irish!

I just did a search.  Your post was the only one that came up.

Yah well the search function is always a hit or miss.

Here are just two threads that will help. I'm leaning towards the Guhl version.

http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=1083.0 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=1083.0)

I just got off the phone with Don Guhl.  He called to get some feedback from me since it has been a week (on Friday) since he reflashed my ECU.  I told him that overall, I am very happy with the mod, but that I have not had the opportunity to really put a lot of miles on it.  It rained here Saturday and Sunday so riding two up, with a toasted tire was out of the question.  The tires are in and will be installed tomorrow so I will get some more seat time this coming weekend.

I told Don about my impression of overall harder pulling and acceleration in all gears and discussed the fact that we should probably have done some dyno runs in lower gears to look at acceleration and not just HP and Torque.  He agreed and invited me back to do some additional runs in lower gears.  We've set that up for 1 July- the earliest we could do it based on our schedules.

If the Guhl mod is something that interests you, by all means give him a call.  I will certainly post our results as they become available.
