Title: Recommended wiring for accessories?
Post by: h2smokin on July 28, 2013, 12:48:31 PM
Curious as to what size wiring I should use for accessories? I have 14 gauge handy but should I go a heavier gauge? I'm gonna install a couple of powerlet style sockets on the bike. I would like to be able to use my heated vest if necessary although I haven't for years now. Otherwise the outlets are just for charging phone,Sena units, etc. thanks

It depends on the amount of current the wires need to carry and the distance they are run.  Since it is on a vehicle, the distance isn't much of a factor.  14 gauge is fine for 33 amps at 12 volts DC (which is 168 watts).  It is unlikely you are going to need more power than that.... it is enough for tons of heated clothing or even charging or a small tire inflator.  Things like a phone charger, sena, etc use very little power (1 or 2A maybe).

Make sure you add an appropriate fuse that is 30A or lower.
