After almost 6 years of nearly flawless performance, I finally have a question for the multitudes. My 2008 sits outside most of the time. It always has. Following the last two rainstorms when I stop for fuel and open the cap the area around the filler hole is filled with water. As I open the cap the water spills into the tank. If I am quick I can catch most of it with paper towels. My question is, since it is hot and I am too lazy to go look, does anyone know if that area is served by a drain tube? If so, where does it drain? I imagine some tiny critter has plugged the tube but again, I am too lazy to go out and look right now.

I would think yes...as I am as lazy as you to physically check the bike. Plus, I'm not near my service manual at the moment.

Yep, there is a drain. It is in the top / left area of the well that the fuel cap sits on (the 'gashole' in forum speak). The vent tube is metal, goes through the fuel tank from the cap to the back, and then goes to the bottom of the bike via a rubber tube. Your guess is probably exactly right- something has plugged the drain hole / hose, either a critter or perhaps just a speck of paint or rust or something.

Probably a mud dauber... Had that happen to my GL500 Silverwing. Blocked up the drain hole from the sparkplug well and shorted out that cylinder during a rain storm. Took a bit to figure that one out... Had an offer from a HD guy riding with us to tow me but I disrespectively declined... Yep, he was always fun in a pinch...

If he really wanted to help he could have tried to blow that dauber right out of the tube.... and you would have a picture of him doing it. I can see it now.... 'Yep, the tube is right there on the left, yep, under the fairing, just pull it out a bit and you should be able to get to it....'

It was a blocked tube/hose. The plastic string from a weed eater worked great for clearing the blockage. Much easier than removing the hose.

Jim when you brought up Mud Dauber it reminded me of a very $$ story
About ten years ago I took my outboard drag boat to a Toys for Tots run
the boat was not used for two months and those mud daubers made nests in my water exit hoses
We dry stack the mids , so we have these extra hoses exiting the cooling water from the
powerhead , two of my three hoses were pluged and I stuck two pistons.
Another time back in the 90's I was installed a 302 in my Ford Ranger 4x4 pick up , had to use a special adaptor with two hoses to relocate the oil filter, ( small block V 8s were not a factory option) NO oil pressure?? pulled the motor back out checked everything ???? was going CRAZY , those F'n mud daubers had a new home in one of the hoses. :nuts:
