Good deal if you want to try the new Angel GT
-
Holy crap! I don't need tires, but I think I'll buy a set. Wow!
Edit to add: It's good till September, so I'll need tires by then. Haha. Awesome!
-
It does seem like a great deal, about $100 off a set of tires. If there is a catch, I have not seen it. Perhaps Pirelli is just trying to gain market share from Michelin?
The one thing is that there is a 14 day time limit on applying for the front tire and sending them the receipt for the rear tire. I applied for the front tire and ordered the rear tire today but if the rear is delayed for some reason, it might be a problem. I would suggest that others wait until you have a valid receipt in hand for the rear tire before applying for this offer.

Good advice, Brian. I really liked My Angel STs, and even though I have PR3s now, I'd still like to try the GTs, so I'll be giving this a shot.

It's good till September or until the 219 left as of now, sell out. I would bet on the latter happening first. :)
Brian, you can also email them a receipt if you ordered online.
-
Good idea- I just gave that a try. We will see how it works out. Thanks for the idea....

So where are you getting the tires from?

So where are you getting the tires from?
+1 I'll be needing a new rear tire soon and I'd like to give these a try.
-
looking for a 55 series A spec, no luck anywhere.
rumor has it the 50 and 55 profile on this tire are close, i have run tons of 55 series and love them. but now i am thinking , do 50's last longer vs 55's ?? and is the gt 55 flatter than say the pr3 or 023 55 series??
think i am in regardless, seems like a great opportunity to try these. (just need to pick if a 55 and if an A spec)
-
I got mine from Competition Accessories. $179 for a 190/55 - 17 Pirelli will send you a front for $25 if you buy a rear tire between [a few days ago] and sometime.... later (can't remember). It is about $100 off the front tire and so a tough deal to beat.
Before someone asks- limit one per human, although both Kirby and Mr. Elkhoof are seriously considering buying one each (not really, this offer is limited to 250 tires and no need to be a pig about it). There is a count- down indicator on the Pirelli site so you can tell how many or if there are any left.

Why bother with the A spec? The C14 doesn't need it.

at the other place, last post on page two of the Pirelli Angel GTs thread.
i am one who blows through tires, say like 4k miles per rear. just wanted to give these a fair shake.
-
You know, I just bought a rear PR3, why on earth am I buying another one... so I can get a front one as well. Just sent mine in ... :censored: this forum. ;) It's taken more of my money than anything I've ever done. Oh well...
Ok. I've been validated so now the wait begins for the store link.
Spanky, thank you for the link and letting us know about it.
Brian, thanks for letting me know where to buy it.
I'll toast you all tonight. :goodpost:
I'll also keep an eye on this to keep it on the first page...
-
Thanks for the post Spanky! :chugbeer:
It just so happens that I need a new rear tire anyways. :)
I visited Competition Accessories per Brian's recommendation and was all set to pull the trigger on a Angel GT when I decided to give my local Kawasaki shop a call and see what their price was for the tire. They matched the online price! Plus tax of course but I'm glad to buy from them and lend some support locally, ya know?
-
As of 4pm est, down to 167 left. If you are interested, I would not wait too long.
-
It's going down pretty quick...
-
just did mine on 6-17-13 at 1:45 Pacific time and there were 165 left.
I guess the catch is the shipping cost and where are they going to send you to pick up the tire?
Hopefully where I bought the rear but they don't say that in the confirmation.
-
Shipping tends to mean it will arrive on your doorstep.
-
It would be silly, otherwise.
-
Been fighting a rear plug for weeks, thanks for the info. Order submitted.
-
ftp:// I plan to also buy a set to try out but it says the C14 is not a valid selection when I go to the Pirelli site to determine the correct rear tire size. Any suggestions? Also looking for recommendations on where to buy the rear tire.
-
149 left.
So what's different about the Angel GT fitment? Anyone?
-
I went through the steps on the Pirelli home web site tire selection guide and it stated no tire for our bike.
They are the right size and are OE on the Ducati Multistrada 1200. I know of several people using the ST and these are replacing them. Should work?
-
They will fit the C-14 perfectly. You need to order a 190/50-17 or a 190/55-17 back tire and the 120/70-17 front they send are the correct sizes.
-

Competition Accessories was mentioned earlier as a source.
-
I have a set of Angel GTs on my C14 and LOVE them. Just ordered a rear for the FZ1 from Motorcycle Superstore and sent Pirelli a screenshot as proof of the order, I am #128. But it takes 2-4 weeks to get your front tire, ooof!
BTW, my rear GT is 190-55-17 and I'm not sure if the new tire is good or the old tire was toast but this sucker LEANS in quick now. So confidence inspiring.
-
I just don't get it. I was just on the phone with Pirelli Germany, who happen to be based in Munich where I live. They were explaining to me that, given the special conditions here (speed limit-free Autobahn) the tires are strictly regulated and manufacturers (both motorcycle and tires) are liable for the tires they specify for each bike. According to their tests, the Pirelli Angel ST was not good enough regarding comfort, hence the ST A that they released, specific for our bike. Now they are having the same issue with the Angel GT and that's why this one is still not approved for the C14. A new version of the front tire is being developed specifically for this bike. Some might remember the U version of the OEM tires that were released a year later after all the complains regarding odd wear patterns.
This is very frustrating. I explained the person that when I bought the bike with the original Bridgestones it was an appalling proposition to drive (the U version meaning just a marginal improvement), and the Angel ST just meant a day and night difference. Problem is, shops refuse to mount the tire if it's not approved, at least the big chains. My trusty mechanic couldn't care less and he would mount a car tire if I asked him to, but he's on holiday :banghead:

Email or mail your Proof of Purchase receipt along with your Claim ID #. Details on how to process your claim and proof of purchase will be emailed to you once you are registered.
Your Proof of Purchase receipt along with your Claim ID # must be received within 14 days of completion.
Where does the 'Claim ID#' come from?
-
After you complete the form, they will send you an email with the claim id...
-
Thanks
-
I assume that once everything has been verified to their satisfaction and they are ready to ship out the front tire that we'll find out how they are going to collect the $25 shipping cost?
-
Ok I'm in. Now I've got to buy a tire. 91 left
-
I submitted my claim yesterday. I ordered the rear online, submitted the claim on the Pirelli site, then replied to the Pirelli registration email with a PDF of the Approved email receipt from the online retailer. I just checked on the site this morning and the claim is approved.

I was just looking to get some tires, I've got 5700 miles on the stockers but they've still got some life left. Almost exclusive highway commuting. :-[
There were 83 left when I checked, so you better get going if you want one.
-
The 'A' spec is what Pirelli recommends for the C-14.
-
Ordered A spec 190/50 and receipt sent to Pirelli. I wanted the A spec 55 but for this price it is not even issue. Revzilla will not have the 55 in until next week and I am sure the free tires will be gone by then. This was my choice in tire just waiting for A specs to come in.
-
The 'A' spec is what Pirelli recommends for the C-14.
That's what my dealer ordered for me.
-
I also. Dealer back ordered '55 A spec. No hurry. I'll get a receipt for Pirelli now and the tires later.
-
Yeah, my claim was validated too- #23.
The remaining number is down to 46. I think the word is out. :-) At this rate these tires will be gone by the end of today.

I don't know, and it was not mentioned in the web page, at least not that I noticed. But I am quite confident they will find a way.... ;D Probably through 'plastic money' just like almost everything now. It seems everything is available with a credit card, the 'Net (or phone) and through several shipping methods including overnight 'cause we don't like waiting for our
toys necessary items. Like that Russian comic used to say 'What a country' but it really is true.

Does anyone know if the C10 members can benefit from this?
-
Not unless they've done wheel swaps. 16 rear and 18 front I think.
-
Well, I guess they could buy a rear Angel in 190/50- 17, send the receipt into Pirelli and get a 120/70-17 for $25. Then in a couple of days, when the special runs out, sell those tires to the owner of a C-14 for, say $250, and use that money to buy a set of tires that fit a C-10. Or were you thinking of something more direct?

As the story goes.... there was a physics test where one of the questions was- 'How would you use a barometer to tell how high a building is?' The interesting answer was 'I would find the superintendent of the building and offer to give him this very fine barometer if he would tell me how tall the building that he worked in was.' The other answers were all boring and involved using an elevator and making calculations.

How can he be the No. 1 twit- he doesn't even OWN a C-14? I mean, Kirby I could understand being number 1 but Brian? ??? Does twitdom really outlast ownership?
;)
Dem Pirellis are going faster than alcohol kills brain cells.
Now the next phase beings- when will we hear from Pirelli and how long / what manner will delivery take. For some folks it won't matter as this is an extra set of tires but some may be waiting to change out some pretty thin tires. My rear should be here tomorrow (hey, I never said that before).

I just received this from Pirelli...
Update on the Pirelli "Fly into Summer" Angel GT Promotion
Hello Conrad,
Thank you for participating in our Pirelli "Fly into Summer" Angel GT Promotion. We have had an overwhelming response to this promotion....the power of Social Media! We are thrilled. We will need your patience while we process these free tire claims which came in very quickly!
In response to many questions we have received, we wanted to clarify the process for everyone to understand. You can go to www.getpirelli.com (http://www.getpirelli.com) and check the status of your claim at any time by logging in with your email address and password.
If you have received a Claim ID# - we have reserved a tire for you. Even though the promotion supply has been depleted.
After we receive and validate your Proof Of Purchase your status will be changed from "Submitted" to "POP-Valid". Note that orders are processed during normal business hours in the order they were received.
Once we have had a chance to process all the orders, you will receive an email with a store link and coupon code to claim your free front tire. Follow those instructions to claim your tire. You will need to provide credit card information for the $25 shipping fee.
Once you order your free front tire, you will then receive another email with the tracking information for your tire. Your status will be changed from POP-Valid to Shipped. Please allow 2-4 weeks for these orders to be processed.
Thank you again for your participation. The Pirelli Team.
-
Yeah, got that one myself. It is quite clear that Pirelli did not expect this response and it is also clear what they credit (or blame) for that response- 'social media', which I think is.... us. ;)
I do question the line 'We are thrilled' though- I think maybe it should include the words overwhelmed and dismayed. How does that old saying go- be careful what you wish for because you may get it? Looks like Pirelli 'got it'. I really do hope people go easy on them because it probably really is not their fault; when you put out an offer, there is just no way to know how it will be received. Notice that they time limited the offer for sometime in the fall- they could have time limited it to three days and it would not have made any difference. Because of the way this offer worked, requiring the purchase of a rear tire, I would expect US supplies of rear tires are exhausted as well. ??

Someone over at the Pirelli offices is in for a long 2 to 4 weeks... :)

What the hell did they think was going to happen? That's like yelling 'DONUTS' at the police station.

For the record it's not Pirelli. It's the administrator, Velocity Inc.
I'm sure these tires just get drop shipped after Velocity sets up the store link to redeem your offer.

crap! off the forum for a couple of days, and I miss out! Oh well, just put ST's on a few hundred miles ago, so I'm good till next spring.
-
My dealer called me yesterday, my new Angel GT arrived. I have an appointment on Wed to get it installed. I'd get it done sooner except that I'm not supposed to ride till I get the 'go ahead' from my ear surgeon. I have an appointment to see him on Tues and I'm sure that he'll give me his blessing. :)
-
The 'quantity of tires left' is now going into negative numbers at the promotional website. :o

Big receiving day at my house yesterday- FedEx brought me a tire and USPS brought me a strop!
(http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f82/BDF08012008/Tireandstrop.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/BDF08012008/media/Tireandstrop.jpg.html)
The new Pirelli GT 190/55-17. It smells like a new tire :-)
And a genuine horse butt strop, with a genuine linen (not 'cotton linen' but real linen made from flax) prep strop. Don't worry though, they waited until the horse died from natural causes before they took its hide (really).
Now all I need is the front tire that goes with this rear. And another strop....
Brian

Mine gets delivered Monday. The tire, not the butt strop.

A Question of Balance
(Moody Blues Trivia)
Exactly. The cochleae is involved in the surgery and I had a bit of dizziness for a few days afterwards. Some folks have issues with their balance after this surgery (I didn't) and the surgeon told me not to drive or ride till my post-op exam. Maybe I followed his advice to the letter, maybe I didn't, it all depends on who's asking... ;)

Nah, my wit is already rapier- sharp. The strops maintain the edges of my straight razors. This is supposed to be a step up- I have been using cowhide but horse hide is supposed to leave a finer edge. It most certainly is a fast strop, cowhide drags (it is called 'draw') but that horse butt is like stropping on wet glass.
(http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f82/BDF08012008/LittleRhody1.jpg) (http://s45.photobucket.com/user/BDF08012008/media/LittleRhody1.jpg.html)
The top one is a custom Dovo named the 'Little Rhody'. The bottom one is a vintage Boker King Cutter. Both are excellent shavers but the Little Rhody is an extremely thin bladed extra hollow ground razor and is a bit 'nippy'. I have quite a few more and they are all getting their turn on the horse butt leather. ;)
"Hey honey, was the water in the bathroom sink always this pink?" Now that's my rapier sharp wit....

what size ?? A spec ?? less rubber as in tread depth ?? what size pr3 and depth vs size gt and depth, :)
thanks much,

Tread depth and I'm comparing to my PR3 55... The GT is a 55 as well. It will be awhile until I can try it out as I just bought a new PR3 for the rear. The front PR3 is in good shape but that will be the one replaced by the front GT next.

OK but at about $100 off, the Pirelli (set) is still the better buy, at least when purchased through that promotion.
The great thing about tires is that they are a wear item and we get to try different types, brands and even sizes if we want to. I think this is a terrific promotion from Pirelli for both us and them- it will get a bunch of these new tires on C-14's and through the forums we will all get a much better, faster feel (easy boys!) for how these tires perform and last.
I kinda' wish this promotion was for Conti Road Attack2s. Been wanting to try those tires because of that clever gradient curing process they use which makes the tire act like a multi- compound tire, and the 'way cool' 'V' tread across the tire face. I am just a little wary of actually buying a tire that is slightly out of the mainstream, at least at full price.

Fixed it for ya! ::)

Thanks, I thought that a response would have been sent out by now.

They did say please allow 2-4 weeks for processing. If you can wait, $25 for a front tire is a great deal.

No rush, just had not received anything after I submitted my claim. Guess I thought I would have received one of those generic emails about how they received the claim and will respond at some point. no worries, I checked the status so they did get my claim.

I just hope all you guys sent in three receipts like I did and each have three front tires on the way....
;D
Poor Pirelli, they just did not see this demand coming- hey, me either. Just a guess on my part but I bet they did not have a tire purchase (the shipping charge of $25) in place and given the overwhelming participation along with all of 'us' talking via 'social media', they decided to just ship the tires without making us wait any longer than necessary. Kudos to them for customer service though, and what appears to be a good understanding that news about a company and a product, good and bad, spreads quickly. Some people are no doubt waiting for that front tire and making them wait long enough that some would have to buy a different front tire due to the delay in receiving the one from Pirelli would result in some cranky forum exchanges no doubt.
Brian
-
guys, please help me with my next purchasing: which tires are you getting: GT, GT A? (front and rear, please)
Regarding the rear: did you order the original size 190/50-17, or somebody went for the 190/55-17?
thanks

I bought a straight Angel GT (not the 'spec'd version) in 190/55- 17. The 55 series are a bit more nimble and just about correct the speedometer error in my opinion at the cost of what seems like a LOT of weight- the 55's seem to be a lot heavier than a 50 but I have never had two new tires of the same brand and type to actually compare them. Might just be my imagination. Other than perhaps more weight, and I could be wrong about that, I do not see a downside to running a 55 series on the back of a C-14.
Brian
guys, please help me with my next purchasing: which tires are you getting: GT, GT A? (front and rear, please)
Regarding the rear: did you order the original size 190/50-17, or somebody went for the 190/55-17?
thanks
-
+1 190/55- 17

My local dealer matched the online price and he ordered a GT-A 190/50R17 for me.

Didn't want to try a 55?

Didn't want to try a 55?
Next time around I will.
-
190-55-17 on mine, no A spec available at the time.
Somebody said the A spec was way heavier. Compared to what? The old tire that came off? Old tires are LIGHT because a large portion of the rubber is gone.
-
Next around time I will.
Quite frankly I can't tell the difference. I'm just an insensitive so and so I guess.
-
I was gonna try a 55 but figured I would give the A spec a shot and it was not avail in a 55 so 50 it was.
-
55 non a spec just arrived yesterday. hope the tread life between the A spec and non A riding solo is comparable.
-
If you mount your own tires, stop and eat a bowl of Wheaties before tackling one of those. If not, don't stand too close to whomever does mount your tires while that person actually does it- you might hear some really bad words. The carcasses on those tires are really stiff and they mount.... with gusto. :-)

Pirelli says A spec is for the C-14. So no 55 this time, next time though.

I had my Angel GT-A rear tire installed yesterday. Great looking tire! I didn't get much of a chance to ride after that but I did scrub it in a bit on the way home. :)
-
I was working on installing a Rostra cruise on my C14 today and the nice FedEx man came with an Angel GT front tire-Problem is I never got around to buying the rear tire!
Anybody else in the same boat?
-
No.
-
Not me. Paid for and back ordered rear and awaiting front which I have confirmation on.

Hey! That must be mine!!! ;)

The only thing better than a new tire waiting out front, is a free new tire!

Thank you Pirelli.

Can you share your claim number and did they let you know it was shipped or did it just show up? Thanks.

Mine showed up yesterday evening..

As did mine #171.

As did mine #20

As did mine, #92. :)

No shipment notification, the tire just showed up via FedEx. Thank you Pirelli!
-
#143 showed up yesterday
Thank you Pirelli
-
Maybe Monday...I am 111
-
Me too- no warning or communication, just a tire that showed up yesterday (Friday, 4th). I think I was #23 on the list.
Nice job Pirelli and thanks!
I am looking forward to putting these sneakers on the bike but as there is a heat wave going by it won't be in the next few days.
I think I may also try the 'wrap the tire and push it onto the rim' trick; a bunch of nylon lifting straps are pretty inexpensive, and I might even try the hook 'n loop types. It almost looks like a parlor trick but it also looks very easy to try.

Is there a video of the tire trick?

A crude version: How to change a motorcycle tire - the alternative method (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHYnA2yZLVc#ws)
I have seen videos of it being done using nylon webbing straps and it is pretty slick. We all know the first bead is the 'freebie' and will go on with no tools quite easily. This is because the bead is pushed open by the wheel and it pops over the lip of the wheel. The other side does the opposite as it is pushed against the tire- it gets smaller. But strapping the two beads of the tire together keep the diameter of the combined beads large enough to be able to force the tire onto / off of the wheel by hand without tools.
Well, straps and of course KiPass..... I have heard that if you have enough fobs the tires will install themselves on the bike while you sleep at night but cannot say one way or the other if that really works. Kirby thinks so though. :-\

Excellant! A successful "Hold my beer and watch this" event. I am duly impressed. I think I'll spend the twenty and let someone else do it. :)
-
But don't let Cletus' execution throw you from the goal- the tires really can be mounted / demounted pretty easily without a lot of straining and cranking on the brake rotor. Really the times I've seen it it was so slick I thought I missed something or it was a trick rim or something.
I am going to give it a crack by using those hook and loop straps that have no buckle. I have been told by a gentleman who I have confidence in that 5 are enough but I will probably use more to start with.

I think you should film it...who knows you could add yourself to Haroldo status... :hail:
-
Agreed, video will be required. We'll be wanting the first run not the editors cut.

What happened to Haroldo? I have not seen a post from him in a long time.
-
Haroldo is still here and pops in from time to time.. He's probably on another adventure.
-
my front arrived, no email or anything. just on the door step.
the rear i installed a few days ago, feels very good, 450 miles through the twisties, hard, felt very stable and predictable. (front is still a 023, worked well together)
-
Just got mine a few minutes ago....must take longer to get to the Left Coast... :P BTW, I have the Angel GT on front and back and they work very well!

There ya' go Jim, fixed it up for ya'.

Wish I woulda seen that hillbilly tie wrap tire vid before I switche'd tars Sunday.... man that's the catzazz....
-
got mine today # 97
wonder how many of us got the 250?

This is a better pictoral but no video: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299597 (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299597)
I saw a video where someone dismounted a 190 rear tire using nothing but his hands and straps, and then mounted a new tire the same way. Not even much of a fight, more of a firm couple of pushes for the last few inches of tire not over the rim.
I have another trick I am going to try- tire irons with shrink tubing over the ends. No need for rim protectors then, just work the irons around the wheel without marring the rims. I think.... We will see how tough that shrink tubing really is.

My magic method is to take the wheel to my local tire installer and pay them $20. Works every time.
-
By the way, thanks Spanky for bringing this to my attention!
-
Last week when I had my dealer install my new rear Angel GT I got to hear my C14 ride off without me for the first time ever. The tech took her for a spin after he was done with the tire so he could check to make sure everything was working. He came back and added some air to the tire and I told him that this was the first time I had heard my bike while someone else rode it. He said that he wanted to take it out one more time and did I want him to 'get on it' a little for my auditory pleasure? I said go for it. He did and DAMN, that Area P slip-on sounds SWEET!!! WAY better than I thought it did. :D

Not to be rude but how does it feel to have someone else make your girl scream?

In this case only, it felt fine. ;)

So today I got an e-mail that my tire has shipped, along with a tracking link. Excellent! Now the interesting thing is that I got the tire last Friday. Also excellent! Either Pirelli's timing is a little off or I am going to get even more tires than I expected. :-)
Still, if they are going to miss by a little better it is this way- surprise me with the tire and then follow up with the e-mail.

Ditto :)

I just got the same e-mail. If you check the tracking info (FedEx) you'll see info on the tire that you already received.

Same here, tire arrived last Friday with no warning. It's not often that a company exceeds my expectations like this, I'm starting to like Pirelli and I haven't even used their tires yet.
Free tire + shipping -> Free tire, Free shipping -> Free tire delivered much sooner than expected. They could have really dragged it out like all those 'rebates' that take 6-8 weeks to receive. Instead they went the other direction and gave more than expected. ;D It was only about 2.5 weeks from the time I ordered to receive the front.
-
Yeah, I did and it was but I am not giving up hope that easily- I still <may> get another tire, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
If I was willing to give up that easily I could never have ridden away from the dealer on a KiPass equipped bike....
:rotflmao:
Wait, is that the FedEx man I hear now?
Brian

I have high expectations too- I have used Angel ST's on my C-14 and liked them a lot except for the decline in handling as the tires wore down. As the GT's are dual compound, I am hoping these tires generally handle and corner like an ST but last longer.

Nope, it's the Paypal man, he heard that you wanted to have a 'chat' . :rotflmao:

Actually, you are half- right: it WAS PayPal and we did have a chat but they brought me another Pirelli 120/70-17 as a peace offering. I refused the peace offering on principle but I kept the tire on economics.

As the GT REARS are dual compound....
Brian
FTFY

OK, I did not think anyone was making a dual compound front tire but it appears that the Michelin PR3 front is dual compound. So yep, on the Pirellis only the rear tire is dual compound.

I thought that the PR2s were also dual compound front and rear?
-
Just looked and yep, those are dual compound on the front too. Slipped right by me.
I guess my attention has always been on the rear tires as they are the ones that tend to wear badly in the center, especially on the highway. I have not noticed the same thing on the fronts even when they are single compound tires. The one set of Angels I tried wore pretty quick on the back but the front was OK so I thought just adding a harder strip of rubber in the center of the rear tire would be sufficient to really improve things.
Then again, maybe the front tire is really worth what I paid for it. :yikes:

Understandable Brian, I'm a rear man myself. ;)
