Title: Hella twin-tone horn
Post by: jtk1531 on April 07, 2013, 06:38:32 AM
finally managed to replace the original horn which everyone on the road was ignoring anyway.
bought a Hella twin-tone set, comes with 2 snail type horns + one 30amp relay. used it in various cars and bikes for the past 6-7years without any problem. air-horns are difficult to find here, and i don't want to deal with international shipping if i can avoid it.

couldn't bear the agony of removing the side fairing again, so i installed it at the same Y bracket that the original horn was mounted.
plenty of clearance from the top of the front mudguard.
L shaped terminal connectors are definitely required as there isn't much clearance between the plastic guard (lower triple-tree) and the horn. i didn't want to bend the horn terminals. i used the yellow connector with the insulated portion cut off.

some pics of how it was mounted attached.
14 gauge wire used, instruction sheet says 16amp fuse required.

I had looked at the Hella horn kit was was concerned with the thickness of the horns hitting the fender if the shocks ever bottomed out.  After researching it more, I found the Stebel HF/2 hi/lo horn set, which is made up of Stebel HF80 340Hrz & HF80 430Hz horns.  They are thinner by 44 mm and draw

I found this set had a thinner profile, draw 3 fewer amps, and are actually louder by 2 dB.  Here are the specs of 3 horns.

Comparison Specs:
Stebel Nautilus Compact Air horn
Stebel HF 80/2 Twin electric
